Infiniti G37 coupe engine specifications

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/26/infiniti-releases-new-pics-and-complete-specs-on-g37/

Leading the enhancements to the 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe is the first-ever application of the new 3.7-litre V6 engine with VVEL (for Variable Valve Event and Lift).

Estimated at 330 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, the new "VQ37VHR" contains approximately 35 percent new and unique parts from the new VQ35HR engine introduced in the 2007 G35 Sedan just last year. Both the Coupe's VQ37VHR and the Sedan's VQ35HR engines are based on the award-winning VQ engine series, named one of the "Ten Best Engines" by Ward's Auto World magazine for 13 consecutive years.

Along with utilising a larger displacement than the previous 3.5-litre powerplant, the G37 Coupe's new VVEL system combines hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake side to help improve performance and response. The VVEL system is also expected to improve emissions and fuel efficiency. The VVEL intake camshafts, featuring continuously variable lift control teamed with the Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS), allow for a 7,500 rpm redline.

The engine also features increased cylinder block height (from the previous 3.5-litre design), ladder frame construction for greater rigidity, large crank journal and pin diameters, asymmetric piston skirts, twin knock sensors, an electronically controlled "drive-by-wire" throttle system, molybdenum coated lightweight pistons, Iridium spark plugs and a symmetric twin air intake system.

A new, specially tuned dual exhaust system has been designed with equal length exhaust manifolds and low muffler exhaust backpressure to help improve engine breathing. Both intake and exhaust enhance driving pleasure with their authentic performance notes.

Rated at an estimated 330 horsepower, the new engine is not only considerably more powerful than the previous generation G Coupe (rated at 275 hp with 5AT, 293 hp with 6MT), but is expected to offer increased fuel mileage and reduced emissions levels. Overall vehicle fuel economy improvements are estimated to be nearly one mpg better than the G35 Sedan and nearly two mpg better than the previous generation G35 Coupe (actual EPA mileage estimates and emission information to be announced at a later date).

New GT-R , 3.7 liter motor ? We have heard 3.7 for a while. There are also the Nismo 3.8 liter versions of the 350 Z running around in Japan. No replacement for displacement.

Do we really need the California Air Resources Board?

Long, long ago, in a state far ,far away... ok its not so far. California decided the US EPA wasn't doing its part to have clean air. California being the know all say all leader in the environment , started up its own EPA, the California Air Resources Board.

Skip forward some years, and EPA and ARB requirements for mobile sources(I am concerned with passenger vehicle requirements) are very similar however different. For some reason, California decides it must just be that much different than federal standards. Mostly just to ensure their existance. At $265 million dollar a year budget, they have to justify their existance some how.

Some years later the EPA made a decision that a state can meet EPA standards, or ARB standards, but can not make up its own. After ARB was established they didn't want to go down the path of 50 different state requirements.

I would love to see how much the automobile manufacturers would save if they had to meet a SINGLE EPA requirement, not an EPA and ARB requirement. How much less would the consumer pay on each car if their were a single requirement?

California is a big state with a lot of power, enough even to push the EPA around way back when, but with EPA and ARB requirements coming to parallelism, whats the purpose of the ARB ? Just to give the auto manufacturers a hard time over meeting two slightly different standards?

SEMA article : Used cars that drive the drifting craze

SEMA has some really interesting information, if you are in the industry. This is just something I was thinking about the other day.

http://www.sema.org/main/semaorghome.aspx?ID=56937

I was a little suprised at the number of G35 coupes. 242,000. I like the look of them better than the 350Z and they seem to have sold about twice as many of them. Most G35's probably being lease cars that will come off lease soon. ( Now thinking about this again...G35 coupes and sedans...no wonder there are 242,000.)

The Mazda Miata may be a popular drift car for the underground- non professional guys, but the RX-8 is not a popular car. Not enough power in the RX-8. Rod Millen tried to compete with one, and he didn't seem to have a lot of luck in it.

R32 A-LSD or Active Limited Slip Differential

USA legal Nissan Skylines from importavehicle.com

The R32 version of the Nissan Skyline GT-R had an all wheel drive system called ATTESA-ETS. For the R33 the Vspec had ATTESA ETS Pro which included active lockup of the rear differential, or A-LSD. The R34 Vspec also got the active rear differential.

A-LSD light added to an R32 GT-R cluster. If you are going to go, go all the way
This picture is of the light that was added to the dash of this R32 GT-R. In this case, not only did the car have the light, but it also had an actual active differential. Along with the active differential, R34 ABS, and an R34 ATTESA control unit was installed.

R32 GT-R with A-LSD differential
On a normal car with a limited slip differential, some difference in speed between the wheels causes a lockup, that can be via a number of different methods.  A fully locked rear end, or a spool as it is often called, makes turning hard.  Both rear wheels try and turn at the same speed. Since they can't do that while turning, you often hear hopping, skipping, and jumping.  However in a straight line, you want the tires locked together if possible.

The A-LSD or active diff tries to be the best of both worlds. An open diff when you want it, and a locked differential when you want it.  On the street cars- aka production cars, the only real input that we see effecting lockup is the TPS sensor, or throttle.  Off throttle the rear diff is open.  On throttle, it locks up. More throttle more lockup.

R34 A-LSD and ATTESA system hydraulic diagram

This is in no way necessary for 99.99% of the people in the world. This was done more of an exercise, to prove we could.  There are a few companies in Japan that have done it, but it requires a lot of parts, wiring information, and overall GT-R knowledge to make it work.  You don't need it, but if you have to have it, it is possible.  No I am not going to help you for free. Work it out on your own.

That black box is a yaw rate sensor, normally for Hicas. This isn't for Hicas.  The bulkhead fitting is for an Accusump
However on the R34 Super Taikyu car, the ATTESA system actually used the Yaw rate sensor, that was normally used as a Hicas input, as part of the feedback for the A-LSD.   The ATTESA ECU is special, the wiring to the Hicas ECU is special, the programming is special. That ATTESA ECU does not exist for normal people.  This isn't necessary to just install normal A-LSD, but NISMO did it for a reason.

POS Denso Iridium plugs

Going over Huberts motor today, pulled the plugs, thinking I should tell him not to use the Densos as they have a tendency to break the electrodes off. I get to cylinder #1 , and its missing the electrode.. Wonder if this is what caused his failure in China. Drop the ceramic, bend a valve, and finish a motor....
