Keith Cowie and RB Motorsport in the UK set new World Record

From: UK GT-R Forums
and Turbo Dynamics

Cowie was determined to set a new world record in his TD turbocharged and RB Motorsport tuned Nissan Skyline R32 GTR, which boasts an impressive 1250 BHP Garrett GT series spec single turbo. Keith has been looking to smash the world record, which was set in Japan and has stood for many years. Yesterday, on July 29th 2007 he did just that. Time recording was done by means of satellite to give a more reliable reading. The proven results were a fantastic 0-300 KPH (0-187.5 MPH) in just 12.65secs. Smashing the previous record by 0.45secs! Understated as ever, Keith smiled “I’ve done it”.

Further stats from the data logging show that Cowie achieved 0-60MPH in 2.5secs, 0-100MPH in 4.35secs, 0-150MPH in 8.09secs and 0-200MPH in 14.75secs all in the space of half a mile.

What an R33 would look like if it were in Dukes of Hazard.

Ok maybe it needs to be painted orange, the 01 on the side , and the confederate flag on the roof , but if it were flying, it might look similar to this. Let me work on it.

Can you ever have "enough" cam ?

Tommykaira R33 Skyline GT-R - Motorex - $93,000

Ebay link

The Tommykaira car was cool and all , but I think $93,000 might be a bit high. There is an LM R33 for sale right now for a bit less than that. Closer to $70k would probably be a more realistic US price for a decent R33 , Motorex car.

Bolt on GT-R turbos

HKS GT-RS turbo - aka Big Nasty. Too big for a 2.6 even though people insist on running them. They are like an undermanifold 2835 turbo. Huge compressor wheel , huge compressor surge.

Nismo 581 turbo. Old Skool. 15 deg cutback on the exhaust wheel.

Just when you think twin scroll housings are the greatest things since sliced bread...

Just when you think twin scroll housings are the greatest things since sliced bread.. then you read Racecar Engineering August 2007 about WRC and Group N turbos , and you need to rethink some things.

You see the all Inconel exhaust housings, the talks of other exotic and exciting materials used for wheels and compressor housings. They mention a Garrett Skoda WRC turbos weighs 4kg (about 8.8 lbs) vs a Group N MHI Evo 9 GSR turbo weighing about 10kg (22 lbs).

Theres also some interesting discussion on twin scroll castings. They basically say that at high power outputs the divided housings distort enough to actually partially block exhaust flow to one side of the turbine. They say the Group N Evo housings are prone to cracking. While the twin scroll works on a street car , the demands of racing require a non divided housing.

Now comes the hard truths , racing turbos , like all good real racing parts, cost real money. They say between 6000 - 12000 pounds ($12,000-$24,000) for a full WRC turbo where a Group N turbo costs about 1200 pounds ($2400).

SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT REACHED ON ILLEGAL EMISSIONS CONTROL "DEFEAT DEVICES"

SEMA eNews, Vol. 10, No. 29 - Jul 19, 2007

The Department of Justice and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) settled a case with a company that had been accused of selling electronic devices that allowed cars to emit excessive levels of pollution in violation of the Clean Air Act. The products are known as oxygen sensor simulators (O2 Sims) and signal to the engine computer that the automobile is functioning properly even when the catalytic converter is missing or disabled. These types of products are known as "defeat devices" and are potentially illegal under subsection (B) of 42 USC Sec. 7522 (1990 Clean Air Act Amendments), which states:

"(B) for any person to manufacture or sell, or offer to sell, or install, any part or component intended for use with, or as part of, any motor vehicle or motor-vehicle engine, where a principle effect of the part or component is to bypass, defeat, or render inoperative any device or element of design installed on or in a motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine in compliance with regulations under this subchapter, and where the person knows or should know that such part or component is being offered for sale or installed for such use or put to such use;"

The company had sold an estimated 44,000 units since 2001 and will pay more than $74,000 in civil penalties. It is also required to undertake a buy-back program. The EPA estimates that the O2 Sims sold had the potential to allow emissions equivalent to half a million vehicles with fully operational emissions control systems over their lifetimes.

What about your state not having emissions ? No... your state doesn't have in use emissions TESTING , you still need to meet federal requirements.

Looking at the DOJ document - I thought it might be Caspers - and it is... ouch.

The Department of Justice and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today a landmark settlement requiring Casper’s Electronics, of Mundelein, Ill., to pay a penalty and stop selling devices that allow cars to release excess levels of pollution into the environment, in violation of the Clean Air Act (CAA).

ETHANOL MAY CREATE MORE PROBLEMS THAN ONCE THOUGHT

SEMA eNews, Vol. 10, No. 29 - Jul 19, 2007

According to the article, “Jerry Taylor, senior fellow at the Cato Institute based in Washington, DC, isn’t impressed by arguments in favor of ethanol.” He has very harsh criticism for the push for ethanol. In fact, he says that “the U.S. ethanol program exists to transfer money from taxpayers to farmers and ethanol processors.” He also points out that the use of ethanol will not reduce greenhouse gas emissions and that gasoline is not the biggest contributor to industrial greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, coal consumption is the biggest contributor to greenhouse gases, and a lot of coal goes into ethanol production.

Coal , gasoline , greenhouse gasses. Wheres Al Gore now. I know Al Gore III is cruising at 100mph on the 405 in his Prius

A study conducted by Stanford University found that more use of E85 will produce worse air quality and lead to other problems including increased ozone-related mortality and hospitalization, as well as a 9% increase in asthma cases in Los Angeles and 4% increase nationwide. Taylor also states that “ethanol is a ‘green’ fuel only to the extent that it produces green-colored currency for corn farmers and ethanol processors.”

We don't have E85 in Los Angeles. How do they figure it will cause a 9% increase in California when there isn't a single station in LA where you can buy E85 ?

How to remove a pull style throwout bearing - late R32/R33 GT-R

How to remove the bearing

E85 Viper does 220mph in the standing mile

E85 has peaked my interest as a "biofuel". Renewable , kinda green , 105 octane. The last part more interesting than the rest.

Nissan Skyline GT-R RB26 oil pump drive

There is an early and a late oil pump drive. The RB26 has some oil, and oil pump related issues. Starting at the late R32's , they went to the wider oil pump drive. No easy way to tell if you have an early or late pump drive without getting the motor fairly taken apart.

Early drive , the oil pump only engages the piece where it shows wear on the flat section

Late drive , again its only engaging the shiny piece, where it shows wear. Couple of good over revs and the oil pump gear in the oil pump splits at the weak point - or the flats at the edges.

The new Supra - Lexus LF-A.

I have been meaning to write about this for a while , forgot to put it up. The new Lexus LF-A is going to draw comparisons to the Supra of old and against the 2009 Nissan- GT-R.

5.0 liter V10 , 500 hp. It is going to be revealed to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show. This years show should be one of the most significant shows for Japanese automakers futures.

V10 NA vs V6 twin turbo. Supra vs GT-R . The natural order starts again. Its a good thing.

Nissan Skyline GT-R RB26 vacuum wastegate diagram

Edit- This is correct. The lines go from high to low behind the engine

After the 100th time of reading someones post on what vacuum lines went where on the RB26DETT as used in the Nissan Skyline GTR, I used Paint(not a graphic artist), and colored in a drawing of the vacuum/boost diagram for the RB26. Hopefully it might help you out.

The boost supply to the factory wastegate solenoid comes from the back of the plenum/collector. The last nipple under the plenum supplies the wastegate solenoid, and directly to the wastegate actuators.

Boost pressure presses on the wastegate actuators to open them, against base spring pressure.

Stock boost solenoid.

The way that boost is raised is by venting some of this pressure back to the inlet side of the rear turbo. The more pressure bled off, the higher the boost pressure will be.

The factory solenoid line has a restrictor in it. The restrictor is marked by a yellow ring on the boost line. This restrictor limits the amount of bleed off from the wastegate solenoid. The more pressure you bleed , the higher your boost pressure.

Do you see where this is going ?

The problem with the stock boost control setup is the stock turbos. If you run the boost pressure too high, you will lose a ceramic exhaust wheel. Normally aspirated Skyline GT-R's - ones that lose a turbocharger exhaust wheel- are slow.
The ceramic exhaust wheels are light, but fragile

If you add a restrictor to the small line under the plenum/collector, the one that supplies the wastegates, depending on the size of the restrictor you can run a lot of boost. With our setup a 1.0 mm restrictor will gave us about 24 psi of boost.
