Turbo Magazine Gets the Axe

The rumors are that Turbo Magazine has been given the axe today by Source Interlink. The magazine page count has been way down over the last few years. Sorry to hear it. It is the one of the originators of the import scene. Now Source Interlink only has Import Tuner, Modified, Super Street , Sport Compact Car, Honda Tuning, Project Car, Traction , I think I forgot some of them. Turbo was only selling about 20,000 copies a month. Just a drop in the bucket. June 1985 - October 2008?

ALL-NEW 2009 NISSAN Z MAKES ITS WORLD DEBUT IN EA'S NEED FOR SPEED UNDERCOVER

Get Behind the Wheel of the all-new 2009 Nissan 370Z Eight Weeks Before the Car Hits Dealerships

Redwood City, CA. - October 29, 2008 - EA and Nissan shift into high-gear this holiday! The Need for Speed series continues the tradition of featuring the most desirable cars as Black Box, a studio of Electronic Arts Inc. and Nissan today revealed the highly-anticipated all-new 2009 Nissan 370Z. This marks the first time an auto manufacturer has partnered with a videogame company for the world premiere reveal of a car. The Nissan Z will be available exclusively in this holiday's hottest action driving title, Need for SpeedT Undercover, available in North America on November 18 and in Europe on November 21.

"For the past 15 years, Need for Speed has helped define contemporary automotive culture by bridging the gap between gamers and the world's hottest cars. As such, we are very excited to partner with one of the automotive powerhouses today to exclusively reveal the all-new Nissan Z," said Keith Munro, vice president of Marketing at Electronic Arts. "Need for Speed is about style, fast-paced action and power; this is definitely a car made for Need for Speed fans. Come November, they'll be able to test drive the all-new 370Z in the game before the car is released on the market."

"Our relationship with EA has been instrumental in bringing the Nissan brand to a passionate and unique audience," says Christian Meunier, vice president, Nissan Marketing. "By launching the all-new 2009 Nissan Z first through Need for Speed: Undercover, we also gain the spirit and energy that EA gamers experience so strongly. Together with EA, we have truly integrated the all-new 370Z in the overall game experience in a meaningful, multi-layered and profound way."

With the signature boomerang headlights and taillights to the enhanced powertrain, Need for Speed Undercover designers worked closely with Nissan to accurately replicate the overall look, feel and performance of the all-new Nissan Z. From the game's opening moment, players will be thrust right into the action with gamers whipping the 370Z in-and-out of traffic at high speed.

The all-new 2009 Nissan 370Z is a super evolution of the iconic Nissan Z, building on the strengths of its predecessor, finding the sports car "sweet spot" in performance, style, and value. The 2009 Nissan Z marks the first full redesign of the Nissan Z since its reintroduction as a 2003 model.

The all-new 2009 Nissan 370Z Coupe will be unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 19, hitting dealerships in early 2009.

Need for Speed Undercover takes players back to the franchise's roots and re-introduces break-neck cop chases and spectacular highway battles. Players discover a world of high-stakes and high-speed action in some of the world's hottest cars. The all-new Heroic Driving Engine propels the action forward as players experience the dramatic story through spectacular Hollywood-style live-action in-game movies.

Need for Speed Undercover is being developed by Black Box in Vancouver, B.C. The game will be available for Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system, PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system, and Wii as well as the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system, Nintendo DS, PSP (PlayStation Portable) handheld entertainment system, PC and mobile.

Shaftless Throttles for RB26

On the GT-R UK Forum a member posted up some pictures and thoughts about shaftless throttles for an RB26

The increase in airflow for a 45mm is equivalent to running a 48mm throttle - but as the GTR one is a 10mm shaft, rather than a more usual 8mm shaft, it could be more of a gain. at 48mm you're talking a 15% increase in cross sectional area. But, because the throttle diameter is the same, you're not loosing out on torque - Plus everything else would fit as normal.
The price for three DCOE bodies is roughly £450. These should be cheaper as the machining is much simpler (no injector hole, or idle screws etc).

Why Should I Let You Test Drive A Car ?

From Australia.
A 19 year old Guy Took out a VY HSV Clubsport for a test drive from Bundoora Holden in Victoria.

On the drive back to the dealer he gave a little too much gas around the last corner before the Dealership, lost control of the car, mounted the curb and flew 10 mtrs over the gate into the front Yard of the dealership.

Lets just say they are reassessing the rules of test drives from now on.

This is a perfect example of why test drives of high performance cars are a bad idea. Test driving a Camry is fine. Test Drives.

SEMA HAILS NEW LAW TO PROTECT INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

From SEMA News

SEMA applauded President Bush’s decision to sign into law legislation to strengthen intellectual property (IP) protections for American businesses and consumers. Passage of the Pro-IP Act has been a top legislative priority for SEMA. The new law increases civil and criminal laws against counterfeiting and piracy, and establishes permanent programs in which the U.S. government works with industry and foreign governments to fight global piracy.

“Lawmakers have taken an important step in helping combat the scourge of counterfeiting,” said Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO. “Our industry is all about innovation, technology and quality. Counterfeiters rob our companies of those valuable assets. This provides the U.S. government with new tools and resources to fight intellectual property thieves. Our industry owes a particular debt of gratitude to Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN) and Senator George Voinovich (R-OH) for their leadership in getting the legislation enacted into law.”

Enactment of the new law was the culmination of more than two years of work by SEMA and other industry groups fighting for stronger protection of U.S. copyrights, trademarks and patents. One highlight of the law is the establishment of an IP czar who will coordinate all government anti-counterfeiting actions and report directly to the president.

Over the years, SEMA members have registered an increasing number of complaints about counterfeit products and illegal knock-offs. Enactment of the law authorizes more federal enforcement officers and agents in the field dedicated to investigating counterfeiting claims. Additional enforcement personnel will help track counterfeiters from the point of foreign production, through importation and distribution to store shelves.

Counterfeiters will face stiffer criminal penalties when they are apprehended, especially if the products potentially affect consumer safety. The law does not change a basic requirement that businesses must first register their copyrights, trademarks and patents with the appropriate government authorities in order to establish enforceable legal rights.

Counterfeiting has had a large cost on the industry, and the new law holds the potential to provide important relief. “Since 1999, SEMA member Auto Meter has spent over $2 million dollars protecting itself against infringing imports,” said Auto Meter President Jeff King.

“Auto Meter applauds lawmakers for providing industry, federal courts and government agencies with more tools to address this problem. Our company is fighting every day to protect American innovation, jobs and consumers, and share this investment in intellectual property with the rest of the world. Products continue to enter the U.S. market, and every year Auto Meter loses tens of thousands of dollars in sales to these illegal products.” IP

Irwindale 1/8th mile - R32 Skyline GT-R

Went to Irwindale 1/8th mile drag strip last night with Jeffs R32 GT-R. Tried it on the pump gas tune and 20 psi of boost. Did a 7.29@99.65 and 7.28@98.80 , 7.3@98.77 , 7.6@101.33 . Best 60 foot was a 1.61 on the 7.29 pass. 1.67 on the 7.28 pass.

Tires were Toyo RA1's. 275/35/18 all around. The 7.29 pass they told me if I ran 7.25 that I would need a roll bar, so they asked me to keep it under 7.25. I tried to turn up the boost, but I think I might have had a small boost leak. We are going to check it out, and come back with more boost. Next time race gas tune and 26/27 psi

Turbolag - 2.8 liter , GT-RS Turbos

Jeffs R32 GT-R went back on the dyno yesterday at RB Motorsports. This is a continuation of my turbolag charts. These are all eyeballed numbers off dynocharts. Not 100% scientific, but not grossly off either. Jeffs car has been a long build. Its one of those ongoing shop projects. Something that gets worked on for a while, and then is pushed to the side for a while. The car has a ton of modifications, but it looks mostly stock. Underneath, the car is almost all R34 GT-R. Front and rear subframes, brakes, ABS , V-Spec rear diff. Lots of cool things that you wouldn't notice. However, this post is all about the dynocharts.
We got the Dynapack controller back earlier in the week and tested it out on Thursday. Everything seemed fine, and we even had new upgraded software. Jeffs car doesn't look too crazy underneath the hood. It still has the twin turbopipe , it still has the stock airbox on it.

Its always the stuff you can't see that is important. The engine is a 2.8 liter that was built several years ago by XS Engineering. The engine actually came with another car that RB purchased . The turbos are HKS GT-RS with strengthened actuators set at 16 psi base. The twin turbo pipe looks polished but its actually got a splitter/divider in it. The airbox looks stock, but it has an extra air feed going to it. Exhaust manifolds are N1's. Exhaust outlets are Nismo cast outlets. Exhaust is all titanium. Camshafts are fairly small. 9.1 mm and 8.9 mm of lift. 272 / 264 duration. +4 on the intake cam , 0 on the exhaust cam. The head has been ported and modified by Jeff of RB Motorsports. Hard piping. Nismo collector. Stock throttle bodies. ARC intercooler. HKS Racing BOV. Engine management is AEM with 24-1 CAS wheel. NGK #9 Racing plugs. Stock "new" coils. Stock "new" coil harness. 1000 cc injectors. Two Bosch 044 pumps in the tank. Twin -8 feeds.
Stock fuel tank with Two Bosch 044 Fuel pumps and -8 feeds in the stock tank
We started on the dyno on pump gas - 91 octane here in California. We were still learning the new software with the dyno. Figuring out how long to setup the ramp time. Mitch Peterson did the tune on the car. Mitch worked at AEM, taught the AEM EMS class, and he knows his way around the AEM EMS. The dyno chart just didn't look right. The car just wasn't running right. We spent a little time troubleshooting it. We thought we had some leaks, or that we had a cam gear slip . We went over and over things, and we found that the timing was off about 10 degrees.
R33 GT-R power steering pump. Rear hydraulic Hicas delete

The first pull on pump and about 16 psi did a little over 400 whp uncorrected. It was about 80 degrees and a decent amount of humidity. We kept pushing and pushing the pump gas setup. We had the boost up to about 23 psi. Best we saw was 567 whp on 91 octane. I would say that the repeatable number is 550 whp and 470 lb-ft. We were pretty happy with that number on pump gas.
The day before Josh had called me and asked if we wanted to run the car on race gas... I thought it might be a good idea, so I went and picked up 10 gallons of C16. $131 - $13 a gallon. Cheaper than an engine. Not cheap by any means. At the end of the 91 octane runs, we drained the fuel and put in 5 gallons of C16. 25 psi of boost, more timing and the car was up over 600 whp and 500 lb-ft. Mitch added some more duty cycle to the wastegates to get the boost up even higher. 27 psi and we exceeded the maximum KW of the dyno. Over 540 lb-ft, and the dyno shutdown. Ramping the boost in slower , got us up to 630 whp and 530 lb-ft. The peak torque would have been higher, but the dyno couldn't handle it. We tried one run, pulling the K & N panel air filter out of the stock airbox, and we only gained about 5 whp. If we would have tightened the turbo actuators up more, we could have made more peak boost, but may have run into the torque limit, but up higher in the rpm range. I think we are pretty close to being done on this setup, at least for this week. Throwing some correction at the numbers, I saw 690 whp. The 1/4 mile dyno doesn't lie.
Oil catch can returns to the sump. R34 GT-R ABS unit and control

We took the car up and down the alley a few times. The first 6000 rpm launch on Jeffs car lit up all four tires for about 30 feet. Hopefully next Thursday we will get it to Irwindale, and perhaps to IDRC in October.
