Sumo Power Press Release

Sumo Power are pleased to confirm the announcement at last weekend’s Autosport International that its recently-formed team,
Sumo Power GT, has signed a partnership agreement with NISMO (Nissan Motorsports International Co. Ltd.) to run two Nissan
GT-Rs in this year’s inaugural FIA GT1 World Championship.
One of the cars that will be campaigned this year was unveiled at the show, the 2010 racing GT-R making its first public
appearance in the UK.
For Sumo Power, the UK’s leading supplier of Japanese performance components, this is a new venture. However, the company
is part of the JRM Group (based in Rye East Sussex) and will therefore call on the resources of its sister company JR
Motorsports.
With no works teams permitted to compete in the Championship, NISMO will provide Sumo Power GT with technical support
throughout the season.
Managing Director for the JRM Group James Rumsey said: “I am delighted that we have been awarded the contract to run the
two GT-Rs. Working with NISMO is a great opportunity for us and the project fits perfectly into our company structure. We have
an experienced team of people already in place, a purpose-built premises with extensive engineering facilities and an existing
parts distribution operation. It’s going to be an exciting year ahead.”
The team are yet to announce the driver line-up for its two cars, but anticipates names will be confirmed in February.
The season starts in April and comprises 10 races in 10 different countries, with organisers reporting that there will be at least
24 cars on the grid

Bad Batch of Engines Sends 309 GT-R’s in For Repair in Europe

There has been some buzzing in some of the European forums about a bad batch of VR38DETT engines in vehicles in Europe. The crankshaft bearings in early left hand drive cars have had an issue, and 309 cars are being recalled, engines and all ancillaries replaced, and returned to the owners. The affected vehicles are only in Europe, and this engine replacement does NOT affect the US, Japan, or the UK.

- Nissan has identified a problem with crankshaft bearings in the earliest left-hand drive EU cars.
- There are 309 vehicles affected and the owners of each one is being contacted directly.
- These cars will have their complete engines replaced as well as ancillaries such as turbos and even oil cooler.
- This will occur at three locations which are the HPCs in Sweden and Greece for local markets and a new Amsterdam special facility for all mainland Europe.
- The following markets are NOT affected: US, Japan, UK.

Nissan Skyline GT-R Acceleration Video

This R33 is pretty intense.  I really like the camera angle, it really helps to give you the feeling of acceleration. I will have to see if I can get that camera angle with a wide angle lens for some videos.

No real information on where the video came from or about the car, but I would guess around 1000hp , probably a 5 or 6 speed gearbox in it with a long first gear.

E85 Fueled GT-R Tuning Results

gtrnosecompblog

Tim Bailey, the head calibrator with Cobb tuning recently ran an R35 GT-R with E85 fuel on the dyno and obtained some impressive results.  E85 is a blended fuel of ethanol and gasoline. 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline.  E85 is 105 octane, and a renewable fuel. However it does have some downsides, but as this is an enthusiast blog, I won’t go into them much, look it up.  Here in California we only have a few places that you can purchase E85, and the energy contained within the fuel is lower than gasoline, so it takes more ethanol to go the same distance, and to make the same power. E85 fuel requires a retune, as the fuel requirements are about 30% higher than 100% gasoline.

The positives are that it is relatively cheap compared to a race fuel, and that it is available at the pump in a lot of places in the US.   Bailey took a GT-R with a midpipe, cat back exhaust , twin 255 fuel pumps, and 800 cc injectors, and put it on the dyno.

Because our injectors are mathematically ideal for ~30% higher flow it’s clear that the stock fuel pumps simply cannot keep up with higher duty cycle with 800cc injectors. To combat the lack of fuel we installed two walbro 255s in the place of the stock fuel pumps. The installation took about 4 hours total as the stock in tank fuel surge tank needed heavy but straightforward modification. With new fuel pumps installed we went back to the dyno with high hopes of sufficient fuel delivery.

e85-vs-stage-2-vs-stock1

Stock on 92 octane the car did 435 hp / 435 ft/lb . On 92 octane with the exhaust mods at 16.5 psi the car made 513 hp/512 ft/lbs. With the E85 in the tank, 18 psi of boost, the car made 574 hp/585 ft/lbs.  They think they can make over 600 whp on E85 with a few more tweaks.

Evo Magazine Car of the Decade :Result

 logo_evo
Evo Magazine from the UK had an online poll on what their readers considered to be the the best and most important car of the last 10 years and the Nissan GT-R won.
car_photo_351721_7
Sadly, though, there’s reason to believe the vote was swung in the Nissan’s favour (and the second-place Vauxhall VX220’s) by a brace of enthusiastic owners’ forums. The rest of the contenders were left languishing as the Japanese giant and the Griffin-badged sports car battled it out in a distinctly two-horse race.

Camshafts for the VR38DETT engine have been pretty scarce so far. Only Mines having released a set so far at 138,000 yen($1480).  It has not stopped cars with stock camshafts from pushing over 700 horsepower to the wheels. The more lift and duration a camshaft has, the more potential power, higher in the rev range, a car will make.

The Ultimate guide to Suspension and Handling Part 1, Wheels and Tires

591486104_twtdq-LThe Ultimate guide to Suspension and Handling Part 1, Wheels and Tires

MotoIQ's Mike Kojima posted the first part of their ultimate guide to suspension and handling.

Horsepower is sexy and chicks dig it, at least a lot of meatheads think that way. Making horsepower is relatively easy. A lot of competent people know how to make power, lots of it. Until drifting became the rage in this country, handling and cornering prowess was for geeks, the road racing elite and autocrossers. Handling was for dweebs that raced around cones in parking lots, or loners prowling canyon roads at night, not for cool people in the scene.

How to tune a car's suspension was an unknown art in the world of mainstream performance, simply because most people didn’t care about handling. Most people emulated the world of road racing by making their cars low. Low was cool, low was handling.

Mike explains some of the basics on tires and wheels, and what people should look for in wheels and tires, obviously more slated to track/street usage than bling.

I am looking forward to the rest of this serious. MotoIQ is full of great tech, you should check it out.

New Year brings improved small containers for do-it-yourself automobile refrigerant

Self-sealing containers reduce emissions of potent greenhouse
gas

SACRAMENTO: This New Year, California’s home-based mechanics
will see changes to small containers of R-134a, a compound used
to recharge automobile air-conditioning systems and a potent
greenhouse gas.

The new requirements, adopted by the Air Resources Board to
comply with AB 32, California’s Global Warming Solutions Act of
2006, are expected to eliminate over 250,000 metric tons of
carbon-dioxide equivalents in 2020. The gas in these small
containers, R-134a, is 1,300 times more powerful than carbon
dioxide in trapping heat from the sun in the atmosphere, in turn
contributing to climate change.

“This is an excellent example of how regulations can be crafted
with full cooperation of the industry,” said ARB Chairman Mary D.
Nichols. “As a result, do-it-yourselfers will continue to have an
affordable product to recharge their car’s air conditioners but
with fewer emissions of potent greenhouse gases.”

The regulation, one of a series of so-called discrete early
action measures under AB 32 has four major components:

   * Better container technology: a self-sealing valve on all
small containers of automotive refrigerant sold in California to
prevent emissions of any product remaining in a used container;
   * Improved instructions for use;
   * A new industry-run container deposit and recycling program
to ensure the recovery of refrigerant remaining in a used can;
   * A manufacturer-developed education program so consumers
can use the best techniques for recharging an air conditioner.

Consumers of the do-it-yourself cans of automotive refrigerant
should begin to see cans on the shelf that meet the new
requirements as existing inventory is sold and restocked over the
next few months.

AB 32, California's Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, was
signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger in September 2006 and
calls on California to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to
1990 levels by 2020.

The Air Resources Board is a department of the California
Environmental Protection Agency. ARB's mission is to promote and
protect public health, welfare, and ecological resources through
effective reduction of air pollutants while recognizing and
considering effects on the economy. The ARB oversees all air
pollution control efforts in California to attain and maintain
health based air quality standards.

Car of the Year /Car of the Decade

Peoples memories are short.  Over at Autoblog, Damon Lavrinc posed the question of “Whats your vehicle of the Decade ?”. Its been a pretty popular post with 412 comments thus far.  People range from the Bugatti, to the Prius, to the ZR1 and the GT-R. .

carofthedecade-630op

Autocar.co.uk’s Dan Stevens picked the Nissan GT-R as his Car of the Decade.

So it’s my car of the decade because it redefines the idea of a supercar; it doesn’t have to be massively expensive (okay, I can’t afford a new one either, but it’s a lot less than a 911 Turbo and considerably more exclusive) to offer ballistic performance in a full-size bodyshell that makes people stare and small boys point.

Nissan GTR

Nitrobahn picked their top 10 Supercars of 2009, and along with the $400,000 2010 Lexus LFA , 2010 Lamborghini Reventon Roadster,Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss , 2009 Bertone Mantide , Aston Martin One-77 , Lamborghini Murciélago LP670-4 SuperVeloce , Ferrari 458 Italia , Mercedes Benz SLS AMG , and  McLaren MP4-12C , they picked  the 2009 Nissan GT-R SpecV.

Are you surprised to see a car from Nissan in this top 10 list? The powerful GT-R has now acquired the one thing it needed to hold its head high in the super car league – a six-figure price tag.

Carfront.com put up its best 10 cars of the Decade, and they put the Nissan GT-R at #8 .

Autotrader UK also picked their car of the Decade. Their list was 20 deep with the top spot occupied by the Bugatti Veyron, however the #2 pick might be surprising to some, but not as much of surprise if I am mentioning it here.

The GT-R is the world's hardest, fastest and most technologically advanced car Nissan has ever produced and has given a bloody nose to every single one of the world's supercars - all for just £52,995.

Most notably, it gave the Porsche 911 Turbo - a £100,000 elite supercar - a thrashing around the Nurburgring.

And finally, at least for this installment, Evo is picking their car of the decade.  The nominee for 2008 was the Nissan GT-R, and now the voting is passing over to the forum members. Right now the GT-R is leading.
