Weighing the Show or Display Nismo R32 Skyline GT-R

Getting ready to weigh the ShoworDisplay.com Nismo Nissan Skyline GT-R

Put the Nismo R32 GT-R on the scales to see how much it weighed at DG Spec. With near a full tank of gas, and nothing taken out it weighed: Videos at the end of the post

RB26DETT Vacuum and Wastegate Diagram and Operation for Nissan Skyline GT-R

Updated for 2019. D.S. noticed I had two lines on this crossed. RB26dett Wastegate control

Updated for 2019. It only took 6 or 10 years for anyone to realize that I swapped two of the lines around. D.S found out I had did it wrong.

The forward hard line under the collector has the restrictor in it. It also is the supply from the back of the collector.  The rear hard line goes back into the inlet of the rear turbo.

As far as 1980s-1990's engines go, the RB26 is pretty simple. Still there are a few vacuum lines that get people confused. This causes either minimum or maximum boost, so its a good idea to check everything out. Also under the collector is a bit of a tough place to work, so a leak may never be noticed.

The boost supply to the factory wastegate solenoid comes from the back of the plenum/collector. The last nipple under the plenum supplies the wastegate solenoid, and directly to the wastegate actuators.

Boost pressure presses on the wastegate actuators to open them, against base spring pressure.

The way that boost is raised is by venting some of this pressure back to the inlet side of the rear turbo. The more pressure bled off, the higher the boost pressure will be.

The factory solenoid line has a restrictor in it. The restrictor is marked by a yellow ring on the boost line. This restrictor limits the amount of bleed off from the wastegate solenoid. The more pressure you bleed , the higher your boost pressure.

The problem with the stock boost control setup is the stock turbos. If you run the boost pressure too high, you will lose a ceramic exhaust wheel. Normally aspirated Skyline GT-R's - ones that lose a turbocharger exhaust wheel- are slow. If you plan on running more than about 14 psi on the stock turbos, have a spare set on standby.

Rear of balance tube. This gives you a nice stable vacuum/boost signal. We normally pull the tube, drill and tap it

Getrag Pull to Push Conversion, ATS Carbon Clutch, and Nismo Input Shaft

Nissan Getrag V160 transmission

Digging though a few old photos I had, from long ago, in a city not so far away. I installed an ATS carbon triple plate clutch in an R34 that we called Bert. I think it was Bert. My memory and old age. Eventually this thing became the Need for Speed car. Was painted gold with some crazy graphics, and was given away by EA.
The R34 Getrag had a smaller input shaft, than the unit used on the Supra. The Nismo shaft was larger, but probably not required for most applications.

R34 and Evo

The ATS Carbon Clutch, had a larger diameter center hub, along with a push style cover. It required swapping the slave cylinder, fork, and pivot bearing around to work with the now push style clutch, vs the pull style clutch.

The Getrag V160 is a popular swap for the R32, and R33 Nissan Skyline GT-R. It requires a few parts to make it work, but nothing too crazy. I probably have them all listed somewhere on this blog, but otherwise you can find out a little bit about breaking 3rd gear in the 5 speed boxes and the Getrag V160.

Nismo Plenum or Collector for RB26DETT

You might call it a plenum, or a collector. Since its pre throttle body, its not really an intake manifold. The Nismo plenum helps to balance airflow between the six cylinders in an RB 26. The first 5 cylinders have bellmouths, but #6 the highest flowing, and generally leanest hole, does not.

14110-RSR45

SPECIFICATIONS:
Collector volume: 4.1 liter (genuine = 3.4 liter)
Intake pipe length: 73.8mm (genuine = 48.5mm)
Intake pipe diameter: tapered from 43 to 45 (genuine = 45)
Material: cast aluminum

PRODUCT NOTES:
- Intake temperature difference at the entrance of turbo chargers is improved averaging 18% in 2, 400 to 7, 600 rpm range.
- At 4, 800 to 7, 600 rpm, power output is increased by an average of 1.8%, while fuel economy is improved averaging 0.4%.
- This product cannot be installed with the engine mounted.
- Installation of this product will change the characteristics of the engine, necessitating adjustment of the engine control unit. Failure to do so very likely will result in damage to the engine.
- The engine improvement figures shown above are based on internal company testing. The actual level of improvement will depend on the engine specifications, conditions of air-fuel mixture and ignition timing, weather and the precision of measurement.
- This product cannot be used with single, large-diameter throttle chambers.

FEATURES:
To find the most suitable shape for tuning engines (400ps to 600ps), the diameter and the length of the intake pipe, and the cross section shape of the intake collector was redesigned. The distribution of air to each tube was improved to provide more equal airflow volume, improving torque in the mid-speed range. Improved air intake volume between the pipes of the front and rear sides reduces the difference in air intake temperature on both sides of the turbine, optimizing the air-fuel ratio and ignition timing and providing increased output and fuel consumption. Simple bolt-on installation means that no additional work is required (however, the throttle linkage and throttle sensor must be adjusted).

1974 Nissan Skyline 2000GT For Sale In California

1974 Nissan Skyline 2000GT

Just saw this come up in an ebay ad. Its a 1974 Nissan Skyline 2000GT located in Costa Mesa, California.  Its over 25 years old, so it is FMVSS exempt. Its over 21 years old so EPA exempt. Its also older than 1976 so its smog exempt in California.  In the pictures it has a California plate. I can't say I am as big of a fan of this year than the earlier Hakosuka Nissan Skylines. Looks the part, so if its something you are interested in trying to buy, hit up the ebay auction.

Nissan Altima V-8 Supercar Video

Updated: Added new Nissan video 2-13-13

In Australia, they have Australian NASCAR also known as V-8 Supercar. Back in the late 1980's and early 1990's, its virtual predecessor, Australian Touring Car, Nissan ran the R31, and R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R, doing well enough for the local boys to throw their hands in the air(Championships 1990-1992), and turn the series in a V-8 based local series.  Nissan is stepping back into the Aussie racing scene with their V-8 rear wheel drive(?) Nissan Altima. V-8 Supercars are purpose built race cars, based off at least some part of an OEM bodyshell. However, they have such an elaborate roll cage structure, that they are pretty near a tube frame car.

This year V-8 Supercars are coming to the US, and competing at the Circuit of the Americas(COTA) May 17-19, 2013.

Check out the video and more info on COTA after the break.

1200 Horsepower Endless R32 GT-R

Its a 2.7 liter, twin Greddy TD06-25G turboed, and Holinger sequential transmission. They say it does over 1000 horsepower without nitrous, but on the bottle does over 1200. Sounds pretty meaty. In this video from XCar, they go over what is in the car, and the car goes for a little run. No two step off the rev limiter launches though, so a little disappointing. They said the car has gone 9.0 in the quarter, and it looks capable of that. Check out the video below.

#383 : Hood Change : Nismo R32

#500 and #383 loaded on a trailer in Long Beach, CA

When I imported two Nismo Nissan Skyline GT-R's to the US under the Show or Display exemption, one was pretty original, the other had a few modifications on it. #383 looked like it had seen a little bit of a rough life, but the price was right, and a good friend purchased it once it landed.

Cosmetically it needed some work on the front lip, the trunk, and some paint work on the roof. The factory aluminum hood had hood pins installed. Inside there was some no name blue steering wheel, and a Japanese ass sized seat(which is like a US size XS). The car runs and drives well, so the cosmetics are the initial things we are going to tackle.  First was the interior. Jack over at VR Motoring just happened to have a stock R32 GT-R seat, so we picked that up one day. On the interwebs my friend found a nice Sparco steering wheel.

How #383 came from Japan

Next, another friend had a Top Secret hood for a gunmetal Nissan Skyline GT-R holding down some space in his garage.  This would be perfect to eliminate the hood pinned factory hood, and add some venting to the engine compartment.

Before and After.

Needed a place to store it without it getting damaged

Next up on the list is a new trunk, stock tail lights, getting rid of the Monster tach, radioing, wheels, and some paintwork.

I found this pic over at ra64freddy.com. Gunmetal R32 GT-R on BBS LM's. Looks decent. Our friends over at VR Motoring have a ton of wheels, and can build some pretty crazy BBS wheels.

Gold LM's?
Some Nismo wheels?

In this video segment from Top Gear Australia, they use like, scientific testing to see which cars appeal to women. Its from 2009, but I haven't seen it before. Its a pretty entertaining piece.  I believe it not one bit, but this is what appears to appeal to Australian women.  Check out the video after the break.
