1794 Horsepower RB26 Engine on the Dyno

Check out the Worlds Fastest Nissan Skyline GT-R's engine on the dyno in New Zealand. The engine from the Heat Treatments R32 is on methanol, and not doing bad for 2.6 liters.  They say its 164 cubic inches - or about 2687 cc.  Stock the engine is 156 cubic inches or 2568 cc.  They have gone 7.41@193 mph and supposedly made as much as 1780 horsepower to the wheels, so not sure if this is a step up.

Heat Treatments are tuning a VQ35 engine for a rear wheel drive drag car, and the RB26 for the R32. This is what they had to say.
"GTR boost was 55lb and the VQ was only 35lb... VQ made its power easy."

The VQ head is much better than the old RB26 head, and there is no replacement for displacement. Especially displacement and technology.

The Heat Treatments Drag Racing team's Nissan Skyline RB26 (164.58 cubic inch) Inline 6 cylinder engine makes 6 horsepower less than 1800 running methanol controlled by a MoTeC M800 Engine Management System calibrated by Shane Tecklenburg (Tuned by Shane T). Engine was designed and manufactured in house at the Heat Treatments Ltd. factory in Auckland, New Zealand.

NISMO R32 GT-R at Buttonwillow Raceway Park

NISMO 1990 Nissan Skyline GT-R at Buttonwillow Raceway Park
Dan from DG-Spec was taking his Scion FR-S out to Buttonwillow Raceway Park to test a new suspension setup, and asked me if I wanted to go. I just installed the Full Race ETS-Pro ATTESA controller, and I wanted a good place to test it out.  Look for a full install and impression write up on that soon, although that will probably go on MotoIQ.

I don't drive a lot on the track, normally I am on the pit side of the wall swinging wrenches, and fueling cars. This time though, with Dave, and Aidan at the track, we had enough World Challenge experience to support a single Scion FR-S for a track day. So, prepped #500 NISMO, with a new set of Carbotech brake pads - XP12 in the front, and XP10 in the rear, changed the oil, and loaded it up in the trailer.
#500, Aidan, and Dave
Started the day following the FR-S around. The last R32 that I drove at the track, was the R32.4. That car even at low boost was over 400 wheel horsepower. Ohlins, Toyo T1S tires(265 all around), upgraded ATTESA, Brembo brakes, R34 ABS, in other words a beast. On pump it did 550, and race gas over 635 horsepower at the wheels. The #500 Nismo is about the opposite of the R32.4. Stock suspension, R888 tires on R34 wheels (245 all around), stock muffler, K&N filter in the stock airbox, stock boost. It is probably in the 250-280 wheel horsepower range. Weighs 3300 lbs. Best I did a five years ago in the R32.4 was a 2:01.8. Friday in #500 I managed a 2:10.7.

DG-Spec Scion FR-S
The ambient temperature, and the track conditions were perfect. Around 70, sunny, light breeze. Really couldn't get a better day. Lots of track time. Eventually in my last session, I noticed the clutch was starting to slip in 4th gear under high load. I knew it was coming, as a few weeks ago, I tried a hard standing start and smelled the clutch for a while. Not a huge deal. If you ever read my GT-R basics, you would know that the fuse is the clutch. I already have a NISMO twin plate coppermix in the garage, along with a NISMO clutch line. Although I am tossing around the idea of putting a hydraulic release bearing in it.

Do You Like Nitrous? Direct Port Install on R33 Nissan Skyline GT-R

This was a Sport Compact Car Magazine cover
This article from Turbo Magazine was originally from September, 2001. Way back when, nitrous for an R33 sounded like a good idea.  With the stock engine, some 2530's the car was 440 horsepower at the wheels.  Once we added direct port nitrous, it did over 650 horsepower at the wheels, even on a pretty small shot. The stock engine held up to several 10 and 11 second passes. The twin plate clutch got a little unhappy at one point. One of the 2530's gave up on the 10.7@137 mph pass. Broke a piston out in Arizona on the 2540's messing around with the tune.

Check out the install article.
Adding nitrous to the already potent Nissan Skyline GT-R may seem like overkill to many. Where we come from if there is a way you can make more power you take it. Our test subject has an enviable racing history. It was modified for Pike's Peak competition and was the Showroom Class winner in 1999. After Pike's Peak, Sean Morris of MotoRex had the motor "tweaked" to where it was putting out around 444 horsepower at the rear wheels. He intends to have this car set up to compete in import drag racing. We decided to follow the installation of a Nitrous Oxide Systems kit on this car to better illustrate the installation steps touched on in the preceding Basic Tech article.
The installation was performed at the So-Cal Speed Shop in Pomona, Calif., builders of world-famous street rods, custom cars, strip cars, track cars, lakes cars and custom engines.

IDRC Drag Racing : R32 GT-R vs SA RX-7

Way back when, I was on Speedvision, drag racing an R32.  Robert "Mexico"'s RX7 was a quick car. 11 second carbed RX-7.  This was in 2000.  The R32 I was driving, didn't have 3rd gear, so I did my best to tree him.  It got a bit loose off the line, but by 1/2 track, Robert was long gone. The R32 was a 12 second car, the RX7 had me easy even if I had all the gears.

Fun times. I'm still playing with GT-R's, Robert is still playing with RX-7's.  http://www.rotaryshack.com/

Original Nissan Skyline GT-R front windshield. DOT 23 AS1
The windshield picture is a weird one, I know. Just explaining something. In the "list" of things that people say need to be changed on a car to meet FMVSS, is the windshields. In the 1950's or 1960's this might have been true with imported cars, but all modern Nissan Skyline GT-R's have DOT 23 / AS1 windshields from the factory. The side glass is AS2 glass and also DOT legal.

As always, Cars and Coffee in Irvine delivers. Ran into lots of friends, and had a great time.
