2001 Nissan Skyline GT-R Vspec II R34 with 764 KM

2001 Nissan Skyline GT-R Vspec II
No typo. That is 764 km. 474 miles. Lets just say its as good as new for a 12 year old car.  This Nissan Skyline GT-R Vspec II is as new, and they even say it has the "new car smell". Who had thought that it would translate the same from Japanese.  They want 8,000,000 yen or about $85,000.  No you can't import it to the US legally, but some Canadian might be able to put their hands on it in a couple of years.

Nissan Skyline : Nissan Heritage

Nissan USA has started to embrace some of the Nissan Skyline heritage from Japan. Never officially sold in the US, the Nissan Skyline has a long history in Japan. Watch the videos below.

Nissan Skyline 2000 GT-R
The Skyline 2000GT (S54) was launched two days before the second Japan Grand Prix in 1964. It was necessary to work round the clock to produce the 100-unit minimum required for GT approval in time for the race. The story of how the 2000GT had put up a brave fight against a Porsche soon spread around the country and the "Skyline legend" was born.

Start of the Skyline Legend
An epic lap during the 1964 Japan Grand Prix sparked the imagination of motorsports fans across a nation and marked the birth of a legend.

Calsonic Nissan Skyline GT-R
The GT-R, reintroduced with the R32 (launched August 1989), made its debut at the opening race of the All Japan Championship in March 1990. In the four seasons running up to the last All Japan Championship held in1993, the GT-R achieved a spectacular record, winning all 29 rounds. This No. 12 Calsonic ("CalsonicKansei" at present) Skyline (K. Hoshino/Masahiko Kageyama) was victorious in 1990 and 1993.

Cleaning and Axleing in Long Beach

Nismo Nissan Skyline GT-R. Show or Display
I don't think that axleing is a word. It is now. When I looked over #500, before I drove it the first time, I noticed the right side outer CV boot was torn. Its a pretty common problem with the Nissan Skyline GT-R. As you drive, the grease that lubricates the CV joint eventually all gets tossed out, then the axle does bad things. So it is something that you want to take care of.  Since I was feeling like working on the car, starting on some cleaning and detailing, I decided it was a good time to hit the axle.

Remove the cotter pin from the outer end of the axle
Cotter pin and cap come off axle nut

36 mm socket to get the axle nut off
Removed the ABS/wheel speed sensor. You can see the torn boot

After the wheel speed sensor and nut, dropped the tie rod end. Removed the end link off the sway bar. Loosened up the top hat of the shock. Removed the lower ball joint. Disconnected the tension rod from the lower control arm.

Axle cleared of the hub.
The right side axle can be tough to remove

This shows how I got the axle free on the right side. There isn't much room, but one or sometimes two pry bars, and a hammer can pop the axle free. There is a clip in the front diff that retains the axle.

I have my car jacked up on the right side. However the front diff may leak some oil if the car is level.  After a couple of good hits, check and see if the axle is free.

Right side axle removed
Torn outer boot.

I will change the inner and outer boot. Put some Neo HPCC grease in the ends(this is what Suzuki from Shift recommended).  Next will be the rest of the prep to get this thing on the track eventually. It needs front differential ,transmission, transfercase, and rear end fluid changes. Should think about a decent set of brake pads. The divided twin turbo pipe needs to get installed. I even have a front strut tower bar I picked up. There is a leak from the back of the passenger side valve cover(1/2 moon, they always leak). I have a set of spark plugs(BCPR7EIX) for it, and I should probably replace the coil harness. The Full Race  ETS Pro ATTESA controller, would also be worth it to install. This is going downhill?uphill? fast. ...Maybe this year.

Tamura and Kaneko Talk About NISMO, Five Letters Taken from the Words NISsan MOtorsports

Check out these two video interviews with Hiroshi Tamura and Noboru Kaneko about the upcoming NISMO line up and its upcoming product.  The first model to embrace the new more widespread use of the NISMO name and heritage is the Juke. Check out the press release and pictures on the Nismo Juke here. We will also see a NISMO GT-R coming up in 2015(2014 World).

I am looking forward to some future NISMO product to go along with my #500 Skyline GT-R.  It is a good thing to see Mr. Tamura (an R32 GT-R owner, and product planner for the R34 GT-R) as the Chief Product Specialist for NISMO.

OKOHAMA, Japan - NISMO: known around the world racing fraternity for nearly 50 years, and passionately embraced by grassroots Datsun and Nissan club racers and electronic race gamers alike.

With the addition of the new 2013 Nissan JUKE NISMO model in the United States - joining the potent second-generation 370Z NISMO - the NISMO name is about to become much wider known among the general populace.

To give more information about NISMO, here are two interviews with Hiroshi Tamura, Chief Product Specialist, and Noboru Kaneko, Chief Vehicle Engineer and General Manager.

Tamura divides Nismo customers into two groups; “high-life seekers” who want distinctive paint, bodywork and interior features, and “petrol-heads,” who want improved handling and more power. Nissan established Nismo in 1984. In Japan and other markets, it has built versions of the Skyline GT-R, Sylvia (240SX) and Micra subcompact

RIPS Pro Built R32 GT-R : Lightest in the World?

Lots of tubes, a floor and firewall

This is an old post, over a year old, but I think that Rob from RIPS still had the car. Either way, it is pretty cool. Almost a tube frame R32 GT-R. He said that without a powertrain it was about 450 KG or just under 1000 lbs. Rob is pretty well known for his RB30 builds, and has been having some fun with a Stagea called MGAWOT, and currently building up an R34 GT-R called MGAWOT II.

Nissan Skyline R34 Serial, Chassis Number, or VIN

I found these charts that they call the serial numbers, but they are the chassis number or equivalent of a VIN number. There were a few minor errors in the chart on Japanese Sport Cars, so I corrected them.  The first R34's were produced in 1997. You can see the prototypes all started with chassis number 000051, the same as the R33 GT-R. Interesting.  The first R34 GT-R's were produced in 1998 starting at chassis number 000051, and going to chassis number 000104. The Altia Nissan Skyline GT-R that Automotiveforums.com raced in World Challenge, the ex-Super Taikyu race car was chassis number 000092, so it was a pre-production car.  This chart only goes though 1999, so will have to see if I can find some newer information.

Nissan Skyline R33 Serial, Chassis , or VIN

I found these charts that they call the serial numbers, but they are the chassis number or equivalent of a VIN number. There were a few minor errors in the chart on Japanese Sport Cars, so I corrected them.  The R33 prototypes were first produced in 1992.  I find it strange that the R33 GT-R - BCNR33 starts with chassis number 000051 in 1994, but there is no listing for 1993. Although from the numbers there, 850 cars from 1994, so its not all pre-production.
I wonder if any of the other odd 3, 70,14,5 chassis produced in 1995 and 1996 give us any clue to N1's.

Some of these numbers don't exactly jive with what I have seen listed other places so if anyone knows how they counted them, let me know.

Nissan Skyline R32 Serial , Chassis Numbers, or VIN

Came across this chart one day while looking up Nissan Skyline numbers, they call them serial numbers, but they are chassis numbers or the US equivalent of a VIN. It is probably based off the Nissan FAST parts lookup.  I think there were a few minor errors in their chart on Japanese Sport Cars, so I corrected them. This first chart covers the R32, but I will also put up R33, and R34. The R32 was first produced in 1988. You can see from the low numbers in 1988, they were all probably prototype cars. Used to test out the production lines, and builds.  Most anything under 100 from what I understand is generally pre-production.  As you can see below, there were actually R32 GT-Rs built in 1988. Chassis number 00001 to 000053. The first six Nismo's were built in 1989, with chassis number 100007 being the first built in 1990.
