How to remove the starter from an RB26 in a Nissan Skyline GT-R

The guys from PPR posted this meme about the top starter bolt on an RB26. If you have ever had to try and change a starter or transmission in a Nissan Skyline GT-R, you know it can be a frustrating experience.

I had a few people tell me they got it from the top, but unless you have deleted everything under the collector, getting at the top bolt from the top is not that easy. The R34 race car, I can get from the top, but most everything related to stock parts under the collector is gone. If you have AAC, oil cooler, heater lines, vacuum chamber, Hicas solenoid, it ain't happening very easily.

If you are pulling the transmission, and have the crossmember dropped down a little, you can have a little more space to get your hand around the solenoid to get the top bolt.  Its a 14 mm head, but because of the limited space, you really can't get that big of a tool in there to break it loose.

The best tool I have found so far to try and get the top starter bolt broken loose, is a Craftsman 14mm elbow wrench. You can angle it so you have a bit of leverage on the bolt. Once you break it free, then you can keep using the elbow wrench, or a stubby flex ratchet with a deep 14mm to get the top bolt off all the way.
