Battle of the Sixes - Haltech Mass Debate

Battle of the Sixes - Haltech Mass Debate

Everyone's got an opinion right? For this Mass Debate we invited Adrian from Summernats and Kristian from Goleby's Parts to debate the topic of six cylinder engines - which one's the best and why? Although this debate focuses on the usual suspects - Nissan's RB, Toyota's JZ and Ford's Barra, we also discuss some other, less popular sixes. Enjoy:) What's your favourite six cylinder engine? 2002 Nissan Skyline GT-R Vspec II Nur vs 2017 Ford Focus RS

This has the internet all ablaze today. 15 years newer. We think the HP might be a little high on the R34, the weight low.  The 1/4 mile time low, they will do low 13's. Top Speed is about right, they are a aerodynamic brick stock.

8000 rpm for the RB26 vs 6600 for the Ecoboost 4 cylinder. The inline 6 will always be smoother and sound better.

All Wheel Drive 1965 Ford Mustang

All Wheel Drive 1965 Ford Mustang
This is pretty cool and interesting, an all wheel drive 1965 Ford Mustang. Mustangs aren't my favorite cars in the world, but cool concept type cars are always interesting to read about. This car was converted to all wheel drive, and ABS was added as part of a package that Ferguson was trying to demonstrate to Ford.

We’ll take the newer one first. It’s a 1965 Ford Mustang hardtop, one of three such cars built in Dearborn and then shipped to England to be converted to all-wheel drive by Ferguson. The technology within this Mustang can trace its roots to 1950, when British racers Tony Rolt and Freddie Dixon set up a partnership to build an all-wheel-drive race car. That attracted the attention of Irish-born engineer Harry Ferguson, who became their collaborator. By 1960, they had created an AWD Formula 1 car, which Stirling Moss drove to victory at the Oulton Park circuit, the only such win ever recorded. Bigger things obviously existed in selling the system to an OEM manufacturer. Ferguson eventually hit on Ford, which supplied the Mustangs for AWD conversion, plus the addition of Dunlop’s revolutionary Maxaret antilock braking system. The Ferguson Mustangs were used as demonstrators, mainly to police forces in Europe, but never went into production.

Tubular subframe. The front differential can be seen in the light blue.

Everything looks like it fits under there well enough. Front prop shaft can be seen on the right side of the photo feeding the front diff that sits below the engine.

Targa Bambina Results - STILLEN Ford GT

STILLEN Ford GT at Targa Bambina

The STILLEN Nissan GT-R is on its way back to the US for some updates, so Steve decided to run his Ford GT in the Targa Bambina over the weekend. Overall winner was Clark Inkster in his super quick Evo, Tony Quinn's GT-R suffered a driveline failure, and was out very early in the event.

Steve reported that the car ran very well and aside from a few adjustments made to improve performance, very little service was needed and no major dramas occurred.  Jodi did a great job as she navigated Steve to a second in class, third in two wheel drive modern, and sixth place overall.  They also won the award for highest placed husband and wife team.

Congratulations to Steve and Jodi on a great result!

RB20 Powered 1977 Ford Mustang

Do you know what a 1977 Ford Mustang looks like.  When I saw the title, I will be honest, I couldn’t really think of what one looks like.  Over the last few years, I shipped a lot of 64-70 Mustangs to Australia.  Way back when, I worked on a RB26 powered Mustang that was in Fast and Furious 3.

This next one is not an RB, but its an inline 6, and a Ford Mustang. 9.96@140 mph. Not too bad. The engine is from a Australian market Ford , a 4.0 liter.  The car is located in Australia, and notice it is right hand drive.

After 17 years , the F Series Pickup is no longer the Sales Leader

From LA Times
"And, after 17 years, Ford's F-Series trucks were dethroned from the top sales position, falling to No. 5 behind the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

"I think it's a watershed moment," said Jim Farley, head of marketing at Ford."

Thats a pretty big deal. It goes to show what a few dollars in gas prices does to the average consumer. I have always talked about "global warming" and consumers choices in vehicles. It is economics that get people to change their choices, not concern for the environment.

"GM in May saw a 37% decline in light truck and SUV sales and its share of the overall U.S. market dropped below 20%, a new low for the automotive giant that in 1980 had 45% of the U.S. market."

"The fuel-efficient Honda Civic compact had a record month with 53,299 sold, a 38.5% increase from May 2007. It and other small cars including the Fit helped Honda, which sells very few light trucks and and is heavy with fuel-efficient cars, post a 15.6% increase in vehicles sold for the month.

Hyundai, Mazda, Kia and Subaru posted sales increases for the month. So did Nissan, which saw an 8.4% increase in sales, driven by a 43% burst from its Altima sedan, which like the Civic comes as a hybrid as well as a traditional drivetrain. But Nissan's results were pulled down by a lineup that includes large SUVs such as the Armada, whose sales fell 52%, and the Titan full-size pickup, which was down 56%."

Big pickup and SUV sales drops. I wonder if people will go for LPG or CNG conversions for big trucks how they do in many parts of the world. Diesels aren't that great of a choice for most people, with diesel over $5 a gallon locally.

The automakers are going to have a hard time reacting to this huge change in consumer demand. It has already been a boon for some automakers, others are in for some huge losses, and may even go away. Hummer anyone ?
