M-Workz 350 Super Lap Battle Wrap Up

Since the last event at California Speedway I have been working on a number of areas to improve the performance of the car. My main focus was to work on improving the aerodynamics of the car. I added a rear diffuser, OEM rear deck spoiler, lexan side windows and a belly pan just before the rear diffuser. The goal was to improve overall downforce without a significant increase in drag. I also changed to different spring rates and alignment settings to optimize the car for the high speed corners at Buttonwillow.

The car had run a best lap of 1:52.9" the last time it was run at Buttonwillow. The current record was a 1:48.5" set by an RX-7 last year. The first session out Billy Johnson fought his way through traffic and was able to clock in a mid 1:50" second lap. The next session which was the first timed session he ran a high 1:48" while the track was covered in dust and rocks from other cars spinning out. At this point we were on top of the time sheets and were nearly 5 seconds faster than our best time last year and within a few tenths of the record. After a debrief session with Billy we decided to change the alignment settings as that was the only tool available to improve performance.

Billy went out with the changes and ran a 1:48.4" second lap. For the final session we decided to gamble on a set of Advan A048's that were offered to us. Since the Hankook's that we were running now had 3 events on them, they were pretty well used up. Unfortuneatly the Advans were slower on our car, so we did not improve our lap time. During the last session several other teams rolled out the brand new sets of tires to make up time. The final result was we ended up 4th despite breaking last years record. The new record is a 1:46.8", so clearly everyone is improving the performance of their cars.

So our season ended up with 3rd at Buttonwillow at the Redline Time Attack, 2nd at California Speedway, 3rd at Long Beach, and 4th at Buttonwillow. The car improved dramatically this year and we will have to see what next year brings after the winter break.

Toyota Supra At Super Lap Battle 2008

Big congratulations go out to Curtis, Matt , Andrew on their class win in Street tire rear wheel drive at this years Super Lap Battle. 1.57.711 on a real street tire. Heres Curtis' account from the event. Super Lap Battle Results on Urbanracer.com

I have a few videos from outside the car at the event. I had a camera I should have put in the car, but I was helping out with Dan's Scion most of Wednesday.

Cobb Tuning R35 GT-R at Super Lap Practice

Some quick video of the Cobb Tuning R35 GT-R at Super Lap Practice.

The car was running new downpipes and had a much nicer snarl than the last time I heard the car.

They ended up snapping the propshaft on Wednesday. The quickest time I saw the car do was a 1:56 on Buttonwillow race 13, CW. Thats a pretty fast time, but I think it could be a little quicker.

M-Workz drives to a pair of 4th place finishes in Season Finals

I wanted to take a minute and update you on the results of the final 2 events of the season that M-Workz competed in. As you may remember we finished 3rd in RWD Unlimited in the Season Opener at California Speedway with Tarzan Yamada driving.

First off was the Super Lap Battle presented by Super Street Magazine at Buttonwillow Raceway on November 7th. This is a difficult event for both the car and the team. It has an elimination feature in the rules that knocks you out of competition if you are slower than 110% of the fastest time in your class. Fortunately we had enough speed to make it to the final round. While I was able to turn a best lap of 1:57.3 in the first session, I asked Billy Johnson to put in some laps in the next session for feedback and to show the true potential of the car. Billy was able to manage a 1:52.9 lap which was good enough for 4th place in RWD Unlimited at the end of the day. We had hoped to improve the front aero by adding a splitter to the front, but were not able to get all the materials in time, so I fabricated a set of canards at the last minute that improved the aero balance compared to our testing at Willow Springs the week before.

Next was the Redline Time Attack Finals at Laguna Seca only 2 days later. This event was also a real challenge as all cars had to stay under a 92 dB sound limit imposed by the County. There were some very interesting solutions to this problem that some competitors tried. There were extra mufflers, turn downs, periscopes and dryer ducting. We opted for a turn down and lifting off the throttle as you passed the sound station. Once again Billy Johnson put in some fast laps in the finals and tuned in a 1:33.004 for 4th place in RWD Unlimited. Just as a point of reference, that lap time would have put him 27th place on the grid for the most recent World Challenge GT race at Laguna Seca last month. Very impressive driving and good car preparation were key ingredients in this result. The fastest car overall at the event was only 1.6 seconds faster, so we were right there in the hunt. After this event I am confident in saying M-Workz has the fastest 350Z in the US. With some more work over the winter we will get even faster.

I would also like to thank all of my sponsors that helped me achieve these great results this year. Jim Wolf Technology, Cosworth, XS Engineering, Swift Springs, Rays Wheels, NISMO JP, Motul, Tilton, Stoptech, Nissan Motorsports, Aerodynamic Solutions, Technosquare, AIT Racing, TSR Fabrication, C&R Racing and Courant Communications.

I also want to specially thank Billy Johnson for the awesome driving and feedback.
