GT-R Registry - Some Number Oddness

Mobile results - 498 BN6 R33 GT-R

While checking a post for the Toprank Importers Instagram, we came up with an addition oddity on GT-R Registry.  I sent the information to them, but I also wanted to point it out.  As we use this data to help describe vehicles, we also need to realize that it isn't infallible.

In this case, via mobile, and via the web, we came up with two different production figures for the BN6 R33 GT-R.

Web results - 492 BN6 R33 GT-R

Now here's the thing. 143+118+69+40+33 = 496.

And when I checked mobile today, I saw 492.   So this is minutia, but also a reason you always have to take some numbers with a grain of salt. We are all human, and often new details and information comes out, in regards to production numbers.

Even last year, we learned about a color code (301) used on several R32 GT-R, that was not documented.

GT-R Registry

This is cool for us GT-R nerds, and numbers guys.  This site has a database of all the Nissan Skyline GT-R, R32, R33, and R34 along with production information.

We dabbled into pulling data from FAST, but here it all is, available. http://www.gtrusablog.com/2015/07/how-many-r32-nissan-skyline-gt-rs-were.html

Will have to explore the exact numbers of cars made, along with colors, and see how much of our data corresponds.

How Many R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R's were Made?

How many R32 GT-R's were made?

Good question.  We always used GT-R Magazine's information. Every month they have a page near the back(front if you go counter Japanese magazine opening), that has production information.

They list total production R32 GT-R as 43,934. The first production car is listed as BNR32-000051. The last production car is listed as BNR32-314649 (11/7/1994). They also list total registrations by year.

Total registrations

1989-4555
1990-8426
1991-7081
1992-7961
1993-6204
1994-7465
________________
41692 cars

43,934-41692 = 2242 cars not registered.

Those 2242 cars might have been pre-production, media cars, exported overseas, or race cars.

There were four different models.

1) BNR32-000051 to BNR32-017466

       1a) BNR32-100001 to BNR32-100560 (NISMO)

2) BNR32-212001 to 223300

3) BNR32-300001 to BNR32-314649

Varations on those models.

  • Standard-40390
  • Nismo-560 (only 500 sold to the public)
  • Vspec-1453
  • Vspec II-1303
  • N1-228

43934 cars

But, we come up with some slightly different numbers based on FAST, and another chart.

This one says the first car was BNR32-000054, with the first car of 1990 being BNR32-005083. FAST says the first 1990 car was BNR32-005084.

BNR32-005083 production date 12/1989   KH2 - gunmetal
BNR32-005084 production date 1/1990  KH2 gunmetal
1989 -  chassis numbers 000054 to 005083 = 5030 cars
1990 -  chassis numbers 005084 to 013744 = 7692 cars
1990 - chassis numbers 100001 to 100560 = 560 cars
1990/1991 numbers out of order = 10 cars
1991a-   chassis numbers 013745 to 017467 = 3713 cars(minus 10 for 1990/1991)
1991b-  chassis numbers 212001 to 215653 = 3653 cars
1992 -   chassis numbers 215654 to 223298 = 7645 cars
1993a - chassis numbers 223299 to 223300 = 2 cars (1/93 only)
1993b - chassis numbers 300001 to 306348 = 6348 cars
1994 - chassis numbers 306349 to 314649 = 8300 cars

42,953 cars. If we add in 3 cars from the beginning 000051 to 000054,  we end up with 42,956 cars.

Even accounting for some math errors, a pretty big difference in what GT-R Magazine says 43,934 cars, and chassis numbers say 42,956 cars.  978 missing cars.  The only cars with the unique VIN/chassis number were the NISMO's. The N1, the Vspec, and Vspec II all were within the rest of the chassis numbers for the year.

Then we found GT-R Registry -

Series 1 GT-R = 17942 cars
Series 2 GT-R = 11305 cars
Series 3 GT-R = 14649 cars
