Magna PT, known until 2018 as GETRAG (German: [ɡəˈtʁaːk]),[5] is the world's largest supplier of transmission systems for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The company was founded on 1 May 1935, in Ludwigsburg, Germany, by Hermann Hagenmeyer;[1] as the Getriebe und Zahnradfabrik Hermann Hagenmeyer GmbH & Cie KG.[1]

Headquartered in UntergruppenbachBaden-Württemberg, Germany, Magna PT manufactures and develops passenger car transmission products and solutions for the important automotive markets Europe, Asia and North America with 24 locations and about 12,500 employees worldwide.

Getrag V160 transmission from an R34 GT-R disassembled

The 6 speed Getrag transmission is designated as the V160 in the Nissan Skyline GT-R, and also used in the MK IV Toyota Supra. There are some obvious differences in the Getrag as used in the Supra and the R34, but there are many similarities.  The Getrag as used in the R34 GT-R is an inch longer than the FS5R30A as used in the R32, and R33 GT-R. The transfer case is also different.  The height of the flywheel is different. It uses a pull style clutch.  How to install a Getrag transmission in an R32 or R33 GT-R.

From Nissan, at least when we were dealing with it,  the Getrag was not a repairable assembly. It was an R and R part. Toyota did have the parts available to rebuild the transmission.  For the race car, all the parts to rebuild it came from Toyota.

The Getrag has a great reputation in the Toyota Supra, holding many 1000+ hp cars.  My experience is that the synchros aren't that durable when multiple people of multiple experiences drives the car.  It is much, much stronger than the FS5R30A transmission

While original parts for the V160 are sort of scarce, there are some aftermarket options to rebuild the transmission.   You can find the Toyota V160 repair manual here

Now days, with the cost and scarcity of Getrag parts, one of the many, many sequential transmission options may be more appealing. Sequential transmissions are fun, but require a lot more maintenance, and work than a street car transmission.  However if you are looking for fun, then a sequential is fun.

Nissan Skyline GT-R Transmissions and Upgrades

There were two main transmissions used in the Nissan Skyline GT-R's from 1989-2002.  The R32 and R33 used a 5 speed transmission from Nissan(FS5R30A), and the R34 GT-R used a 6 speed transmission from Getrag V160(FS6R93A).

The FS5R30A is very similar to the 300ZX transmission internally. The Getrag is similar to the transmission used in the MK IV Toyota Supra. The input shaft and main shaft are unique to the GT-R on both transmissions, the rest of the internal parts are interchangeable if you have the right version of the gearbox. There were some running changes, and not everything is the same.

Below is some information I have gathered through the years about Nissan Skyline GT-R transmissions. Not all the latest stuff is on the list. There are a few more PPG options now, few more other things you can do, but most of the information is good. All wheel drive cars are hard, hard, hard on the transmission. When the wheels don't slip, the hard parts break. Third gear is a big one in R32/R33. Bang third gear hard, and it will let go. Some people say the late R33 box is stronger, but I have tried them all, and broken them all. Once, twice in a week in a 500 hp R32 with a nasty clutch(unsprung HKS/Tilton). You want a sprung hub, you want to run Redline Shockproof Heavy gear oil in most trans(not the V160).

The Getrag is loud at idle. The synchros aren't that durable. Even though the Supra guys run them pretty hard, we break weird hard parts in them. Sequentials take some getting used to. Fun, but you have to treat them like a race box(which they are). They require frequent rebuilds if you are 1/2 way serious. Some gearboxes have helical cut gears, some have straight cut gears.

If its a street car, or you ever really plan on driving it on the street, do yourself a favor, and get helical cut gears. I put about 2000 street miles in an R32 with a PPG trans. Straight cut, dog engagement. The whine from the gearbox cruising on the highway way pretty annoying. Louder than the 4 inch exhaust, and the Weldon fuel pump.  Your mileage may vary, but the pitch and tone of it, isn't a good sound for a long time. Its 2024, and there are a few more options available, including pure drag race only Powerglides and Turbo400's. Then there are also DCT and 8HP options

The OS Giken kits, are just that kits to replace the gears. They also have their OS88 sequential transmission .

What can help a stock geared, or even an OS Giken geared 5 speed transmission, is a billet center plate. We find that flex in the OEM center plate contributes to failures of 3rd gear. When anything breaks, is always up to car, clutch, fluid, driver, tires.

What Oil Should I Use in My Transmission? What Fluid Should I Use in My Gearbox?

Nissan's recommendations on fluid types.

If the car is 100% stock, then the recommended fluid for the 5 speed transmission  is a GL4 75-90. If you have a modified car, then I don't recommend staying stock.

Transmission fluid - Don't try and fill it though the gear shifter. Though the gear shifter is the transfer case . GL4 75-90 4.1 liters (4.3 quarts) for the FS5R30A or 5 speed. The Getrag uses 1.8 liters.

The Getrag uses Nissan part KLD40-00004 transmission fluid or oil

Same question, asked two different ways.  What fluid for your Nissan Skyline GT-R Gearbox. There are two main boxes, stock FS5R30A 5 speed, and the V160 Getrag.

The 6 speed uses specific fluid Nissan part number KLD40-00004 ,  08885-01306 from Toyota, or we have used Redline High Temp ATF, and Royal Purple ATF.

GL-4 gear oils are typically recommended for spur and helical gears found in manual transmissions and transaxles operating under moderate speeds and loads. GL-5 gear oils are typically recommended for hypoid gears in automotive axles operating under high-speed, high-load conditions

For a modified car with a heavily loaded transmission (R32 GT-R, R33 GT-R and the Stagea 260RS), the ONLY fluid we recommend, after 25 years of working on Nissan Skyline GT-R, is Redline Shockproof Heavy Gearoil.

Here is the reason.

3rd gear sheared on a FS5R30A transmission. These are early and late transmission.
An all wheel drive car puts loads into transmissions, that a rear wheel drive car will just never see.  These gears are expected to transmit the power from the engine to the ground. In a rear wheel drive car you will always have some slippage, which is much less in an all wheel drive car.

Redline Shockproof Heavy
  • Film thickness greater than an SAE 75W250, yet low fluid friction like 75W90
  • For heavily-loaded racing differentials and transmissions, problem gearboxes
  • Unique lubricant with solid microscopic particles offers low drag/high protection
  • Relatively low viscosity, yet cushions gear teeth under extreme pressure
  • Helps to prevent tooth breakage, resists throw-off
Redline does not recommend Shockproof Heavy in a synchro trans due to its extreme slipperiness.
  • Not recommended for most synchro applications due to the product's extreme slipperiness

Here is a truth though. If you don't run it in a FS5R30A, your transmission gears (3rd gear) won't last long enough to care what happens to your synchros. About 90% of the people we talk to with synchro issues, once they put some Shockproof Heavy in the trans, the problems go away.  While this may be masking the issue, the reality is again, the gears in the trans will not outlast the synchros when run hard.  If you sit in a parking lot with the hood open, in a lawn chair, then run whatever fluid your "boy" recommends. However if you bang gears in a Nissan Skyline GT-R with any amount of power, Shockproof is the absolute best thing you can do to ensure a longer life for third gear.

Fs5R30A Transmission in a Nissan Skyline GT-R. Third gear is the 2nd gear from the top. Notice the mismatch of the two gears.

We first came across Redline Shockproof Heavy Gearoil after breaking two 3rd gears in a 500hp R32 GT-R in a week.  While at Nissan North America, while they were still in Gardena, we spoke to Frank Honsowetz casually about our issue.  He mentioned in the Nissan race trucks, they used to break transmissions all the time over the jumps. Once they put Shockproof Heavy in the transmissions their failure rate went way down.

Redline shockproof stuck to the gears

So we tried it. Once we started using it, our transmission failures decreased greatly. Not two in a week anymore. We still broke some transmissions, but the rate was much lower.

Onto years later, racing a front wheel drive car. We would break a trans every couple months of "normal" track use. More often depending on who was driving. In that car, we swapped out to Shockproof Heavy, and in a year of SCCA Pro racing, only broke one transmission, in two cars, in a thirteen race season.   While doing differential testing, the differential company asked us to use their fluid. First time out, we popped the transmission.  Switched the fluid back to Shockproof Heavy, and no further failures.

Any car that I run hard now, If I can use a gear oil in the transmission, the ONLY thing I will use is Shockproof. Any other fluid is setting myself up for failure. If I break it with Shockproof in it, then I need to have a look at those failures and fix them, before filling it up with Shockproof again.

How To Install a Six Speed Getrag Transmission in an R32/R33 Nissan Skyline GT-R

R32 GT-R and R34 Super Taikyu race car

There were two main transmissions used in the Nissan Skyline GT-R's from 1989-2002.  The R32 and R33 used a 5 speed transmission from Nissan(FS5R30A), and the R34 GT-R used a 6 speed transmission from Getrag V160(FS6A93A). The FS5R30A is very similar to the 300ZX transmission internally. The Getrag is the same transmission as used in the Toyota Supra. The input shaft and main shaft are unique to the GT-R, the rest of the internal parts are interchangeable. R32/R33 has 4.111 gear ratio, the R34 has a 3.545 gear ratio.  We have seen people running 4.3, 4.111, 3.7, and 3.54 on R32/R33/R34.

The Getrag is loud at idle. The synchros aren't that durable. Even though the Supra guys run them pretty hard, we break weird hard parts in them.  They are a newer transmission and offer 6 speeds. The price on them is going up, but they are still a popular swap.  Nissan Skyline GT-R Transmission and Upgrade information

Nissan/Nismo says that the R32 body/chassis needs to be slightly modified to fit the Getrag.  We have put several in cars, and not had to alter anything. However we have talked to people that have had issues, from the firewall to right behind where the transfercase is mounted.  So it may take a 5 lb sledge to "clearance" some cars.

R34 Getrag V160 Nissan transmission oil or fluid KLD40-00004

The Getrag uses Nissan part KLD40-00004  or  08885-01306 from Toyota, or we have used Redline High Temp ATF, and Royal Purple ATF.

08885-01306 Getrag V160 Fluid for an R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R

Everything is pretty straightforward. Remove the old transmission, install the Getrag. If you have all the right parts it should go smoothly. We have seen NISMO mention that the floor needs some hammering, but we didn't run into that issue in the R32 GT-R's that we have done. The recommended gear ratio is 3.7. Splitting the difference between the R32/R33 4.111 and the R34 3.545.  If you have ever seen the Mines R34 getting down on video, we think that car is running the Getrag with 4.3 gears. Using some mechanical advantage.
