Midnight Purple II R34 GT-R sells for $310,000 on Bring A Trailer

Just a few days after the last 1999 Nissan Skyline GT-R Vspec sold for $315,187 another MPII car sold for $310,000 on Bring A Trailer. It is interesting to see these cars bringing this much money. With only 282 cars produced, and currently legal for the US under the Show or Display exemption, it is a desirable car.  For those that don't want to wait until the R34 GT-R is 25 years old, Show or Display is an option.

There are a lot of misconceptions about the Show or Display exemption.  Show or Display is an NHTSA exemption, not an EPA exemption, not a title, not a registration exemption. It just allows you to import certain, specific, approved vehicles under that exemption, without meeting required Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

Some people think they get a title that lists the vehicle as Show or Display. Some people think that a Show or Display car is always limited to 2500 miles, both of those statements being false. The NHTSA doesn't issue titles, once the car is over 25 years old, it is free from the Show or Display requirements.

Show or Display is not open to just any car you want to import.  A Show or Display car must be approved, and must be individually approved.   The 2021 list of approved vehicles for Show or Display is here
