R32 Nissan Skyline Jack Points - Jacking Points - Lift Points

Huge transmission, or tiny jack?

When done wrong, this small thing can cause a lot of issues.  Most service jacks that you find, have a flat jack pad. This jack pad gives you lots of options for a car with a full frame, but for a car like a Nissan Skyline, that is a unibody, you have to be a little more careful where you jack.

2 Post Lift, or Floor Rack

Hydraulic Jack

Most people won't have a jack long enough to hit either of those two lifting points.  They are a significant way under the car.   We have lifted from the tow hook, which won't lift evenly, but is pretty easy to hit, even with a lowered car.   We have also lifted from the front of the tension rod for the front.   At the rear, just under the differential is pretty easy to hit, and will lift the car evenly.

Nissan Skyline Insurance : JDM Vehicle Insurance

This question pops up about one to two times a day on the Facebook Skyline groups.  Insurance is required in  many/most areas to be able to legally drive your vehicle on the roads.

The issues that people normally run into are that the Nissan Skyline has a short VIN or chassis number that does not conform to US FMVSS standards from 1981 up.  However these vehicles, that are over 25 years old, are FMVSS exempt.  So like vehicles older than 1981, it is possible to enter and get a quote.

Insurance itself is tied to many factors, so the actual numbers of what people pay, are pretty much irrelevant.  For everyone person that has State Farm, Progressive, or Geico, there are two others that got denied.

This poll was posted in one group.  As you can see the majority of owners were covered by USAA. Many ex-military in the owners groups.

RB26DETT Timing Belt Tensioner Failure

All the balls are on the left side.

Sean Kirby, aka the other Sean, or am I the other Sean, either way, posted these pictures of a tensioner bearing failure.   He says that this is most likely the original timing belt.  The belt, tensioner, idler, and spring should be replaced every 60,000 miles.  If you don't know if it has been replaced, with certainty, replace it. Always a good idea to do the water pump at the same time, as it is behind the timing belt.

Top Gear America Nissan Skyline GT-R : Behind the Scenes

We filmed partially at Hoonigan Donut Garage, just down the street in Long Beach.

We had a great time shooting for Top Gear America with a few R32 GT-R's. Those with a keen eye might have noticed two gunmetal R32 used in many of the scenes, and a NISMO R32 used for the Stig lap.

Zexel Nissan Skyline GT-R Race Car - Spa Francorchamps

Zexel BNR32 GT-R Race car

Thanks to Sato from Toprank for the pictures of this R32 race car.  This car has some interesting history from what we can tell.  The car now appears to have all the features of a Group A car. That is altered suspension pickup points, trailing calipers, center lock wheels.  From what we can tell this is how the car looked when it raced in 1992.  In 1991, the car won the 24 hours of Spa Francorchamps.  From what is said about this car, this is a recreation because the original was hurt in a fire.

Watching the video, the car had a pit fire during refueling at night. While the fire was pretty intense, it really didn't look like it did much more than superficial damage.

This car is chassis number BNR32-000351, which started life as a gunmetal street car, according to GT-R Registry.

VIN Swap R34. MotoRex R33 VIN on an R34 GT-R

BCNR33-004616 which should be a 1995 R33 GT-R

So far two different people have asked me about this car, so it is time to put up a post, and explain what we have here.

This car popped up on an auto dealer website in Atlanta.  The car is listed as a 1999 Nissan Skyline, which is how it looks in the pictures.  However the VIN or chassis number they list is for an R33 GT-R, which were produced from 1995 to 1998.  So what is going on here?

The description.

This is not an R33 GT-R.

Even though we don't have BCNR33-004616 in our MotoRex list of vehicles, it is possible that this is a MotoRex car.  We have also seen forged MotoRex documents. The thing to do is call the NHTSA at (202)366-5291 to get a copy of the bond release.

One huge red flag here.  Someone has taken an R34 GT-R, and put an R33 VIN on it. So even if the actual VIN is correct, and a MotoRex car, it has been swapped.  And not just swapped or rebodied on another R33, but they used an R34.  This always calls into question of how this body/car was imported, if it is stolen, etc.  Without the original VIN number, there is no way to tell, and police agencies should treat this vehicle as stolen, per the NHTSA(see above).

If it was a crashed MotoRex car and rebodied, then why are these guys selling it as "no accidents." There is more to this story, and for a $135k car, you really don't want any shady stories.

Can I have two VIN's on my car, or a VIN that does not meet NHTSA requirements?

At $135,000 for this vehicle, we highly recommend staying away from it.  While it might have correct paperwork for an R33 GT-R, everything else about it is wrong.

RB26 - Nissan Skyline GT-R Oil Leaks

The hot side of an RB26

The RB26 is not the most simple engine on earth. There are lots of places for an oil leak. Here are a few of the most common engine oil leaks.  Although along with engine oil you can have front diff leak, power steering, transmission, transfercase, ATTESA system, and rear end leaks.

K&N HP 2008 Oil Filter for RB26

Oil Filter

The first easy one.  When you change the oil on an RB26, oil will often leak and pool on the top of the front diff.  Do your best to clean it off, otherwise you might be hunting something that isn't there, when you see a little puddle under your car.

Oil pools on the front differential.

Nissan Skyline Alternators

Alternators are a pretty unsexy device. They hide somewhere in your engine compartment, lower right side of an RB26, and it just spins, and spins. What they do actually do is provide electricity at around 14 volts to your car. Even though we call a cars system 12 volts, it is normally 13-14 volts running. A car should never have to dip into the reserve capacity of the battery when it is running, however it might.

R32 GT-R Fuel Tank Leak

We have seen this once ourselves, but heard about it a few times from people.   There are a couple of vent lines on the fuel tank. On this car, it leaked fuel when filling up.  Once the tank was removed, it was pretty obvious what was wrong.  The R32 GT-R uses a plastic tank, the other Skylines use a metal tank.  They can rust, which we have also heard of, but have never seen.

There are several lines on the top of the tank that can perish and leak. When you have it down, make sure you replace all the ones you can see. Do it once, do it right.

Genuine is best - FAKE wheels fail safety test

Fake wheel failing a pothole test.
A set of fake wheels on sale in Australia have been shown to dangerously disintegrate at just 50km/h in testing. The test was carried out by the Australian automotive industry and saw Mercedes-Benz Australia Pacific and GM Holden team up to demonstrate to consumers the serious safety risks that can be associated with fake parts.

Using imitation Mercedes-Benz wheels purchased online from an Australian-based seller, engineers set out to compare them to genuine wheels in an impact test.

The test was a pothole test, which saw fake wheels break apart at just 50km/h. This occurred in separate tests, one in which the point of impact was close to a spoke and one where the point of impact was midway between the spokes. Under the same tests, the genuine wheels sustained no visible damage
