Nissan Stagea WGNC34 Rear Suspension

Nissan Stagea 260RS for sale at Toprank Importers

The Nissan Stagea WGNC34 Autech 260RS is sort of a hodgepodge of different Nissan parts.  One of the areas that its a little different is the rear suspension/coil overs. This is a place you have to be really careful with the wheel size and offset, as the coil overs are more vertical than on the R32 to R34 GT-R.

Notice where the height adjuster sits in relation to the wheel edge

Careful

Victor got a little too aggressive with his rear offset, and needed to borrow an Ohlins

The rear coilovers/shocks use an R33/R34 lower and an R32 GT-R spaced upper. We found this out one day when loaning some Ohlins to Victor. We didn't have any specific Stagea suspension in stock, so we ended up "making" a set that would bolt on and let the car roll around.

R's Day 2023 in the Stagea 260RS

Nissan Stagea 260RS US Legal
Not really the way you want to end a weekend, but it happens.

R's Day 2023 has come and gone.  It was another fun year of Skyline GT-R fun at the track. This year again we were at Willow Springs, specifically the Streets of Willow Springs.  Last year we did the track clockwise, this year we went counter clockwise.  Streets of Willow is a great track for people of all skill levels. Big track is much faster, much scarier for newer drivers.  Since R's Day is a fun event, we want to make sure everyone is within their comfort level.

Stagea 260RS at Streets of Willow Springs.

This year it really felt like we were behind it the whole time.  I had slowly worked with Ernie on the Stagea 260RS.   Since the last update, put a new Nistune in the #gtrhunter.  So its on the 1150 cc long nose injectors, R35/Nissan style blade MAF in OEM sized housings, R35 ignition coils in an original Supertech mounting bracket. We also added an oil cooler, and an oil filter relocation, swapped wheels around a few times, added a gas cap holder(maybe critical part of this build), a Carbing strut tower bar with master cylinder stopper, some used Yokohama A052, and some OS88 sequential transmisson.

This was the best lap in the car. 1:27.2  Shortly after this, I heard a noise. I immediately slowed down and pulled off track.  I actually thought it was the transmission. But further investigation in the pit determined it to be #6 cylinder. #6 rod bearing. During that session I was monitoring boost, and seeing peaks of only about 10-11 psi.  However cornering over 1.2 G's, high revs, and that #6 decided it had enough.  It was a given based on what knew about the history of the engine. So next will be....?

Swapping the strut tower bar to this one from Carbing. This fits R33/R34 and Stagea. It has a built in master cylinder stopper.

If you watch the firewall/ master cylinder flex when you push on the brake pedal, you will understand the benefit of a master cylinder stopper.

Critical part to the daily driving duties of a car that uses E85. A gas cap holder. This one came from Etsy. Some doublesided tape and you are GTG.

Ernie looking just as happy as ever!

Borrowing Ernies OS88 to put in the Stagea

Sequential transmissions are fun. They are loud. They are clunky. Its possible to get everything wrong.  Since they are dog engagement, it sounds like you are hitting the transmission with a hammer on each shift. If you don't shift firmly, and "TELL" it you want the next gear, it will probably not engage the next gear.  The OS88 in the Nismo stopped selecting reverse before last R's Day.  In this case, we didn't have the time to troubleshoot the trans, but probably should have. We tested Ernie's OS88 on the bench and everything seemed good, but once we got it in the car, we had all the forward gears, no reverse gear.

In contemplating what to do, we started to take the other OS88 apart. Once we got it far enough apart to look at it, we figured out the issue. Honestly with the design, even fixing/replacing the clip that was ajar, wouldn't be a permanent fix. We could have put the old trans back, we could have done a lot of things, but in the end, decided pushing it back for reverse was the best course of action.  Not the best course, but such is life.

Front undertray and OS88 specific trans mount. You can use the OEM but then its the lowest point on the car.

Aligning the clutch. The OS88 uses the large input shaft, so a specific clutch. Its GM splines.

OS88 sequential transmission mounted in the Stagea 260RS

Oil filter and swirl pot mount by Cisco.
Since the Stagea has a different fuse box than the R33/R34 mounting a remote oil filter is a little more difficult of a job. I also wanted to mount a swirl pot, and an oil cooler. At the track I always get a car hot. I run it between 5000 and 8500 rpm to keep it in the meat of the powerband. This causes heat in the oil and water.  This was the quickest and easiest place we could find to mount. There were a few other possibilities, like moving the battery, or mounting underneath, but to get it done we mounted here.

265 on the left. 265 on the right

Stagea 260RS full of fuel, no driver 3723 lbs.

54% of weight on the nose 46% on the rear. Its better than the R32/R33/R34 GT-R

50.2 on the cross weights is better than I expected.

1999 R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R vs 2023 Nissan Z Proto Spec // THIS vs THAT

1999 R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R vs 2023 Nissan Z Proto Spec // THIS vs THAT

Get ready for an epic showdown in the latest episode of Hoonigan This vs That! We're pitting a legendary R34 GT-R against a brand new Z in a drag race. With the Z boasting a 400 hp rating, we know this won't be a walk in the park. But we're not ones to back down from a challenge, especially with the R34's iconic 280 ps rating. And the best part? It's only two months until the first R34 GT-R turns 25 and becomes legal to import to the US. Don't miss out on the adrenaline-pumping action!

So what happens in real life, when Hoonigan asks you for a "stock" R34 GT-R to race against a new Z? 280 hp, all wheel drive, vs 400 hp rear wheel drive? Well if you are me, you don't want to bring a stock R34. Something closer to 400 hp would be better, after all I don't go racing to lose. I do always try and research anything I am racing against. One of our customers had this R34 in town. It was displayed wrapped at the Grand Turismo industry event, it was at the Motor Trend JAI in Monterey. It shot a Yokohama tire commercial. So it got around while it was visiting.

So it looks like it had some donwpipes, an exhaust. On a R888 tire, which isn't a drag tire, but is/can be sticky. Z was a manual which on an unprepared surface like a runway is difficult.

Can not confirm or deny the hat

My joke about these cars is always the 280 ps - 276/hp "gentlemans agreement" for any of the 90's Japanese cars.  So since they wanted to race a 400 hp car vs a "stock" R34 I chose to stick to the 280 ps figure. I never dynoed the car, I don't know what it actually makes, but I could guess.  In theory a new Z is anywhere from a low 12 second, to a high 12 second car stock. Motor Trend said 12.9@107. Car and Driver said 12.6@115 mph on 93. With exhaust and tune, it could easily be an 11 second car.

Prior to the race, we were sitting down with the owner of the Z, George from Sac City Auto Parts. He was a big Nissan guy, and we had a nice talk. I probably bought some used parts from him before.   It was pretty hot that day, in the 90's. Not the best for turbo cars, but both are on the same field. The race itself was interesting. First race heads up. We just rolled up to the line, no prep, no burnouts, nothing. Just rolled up, stopped. Brad went through his motions, and dropped his arms.  I wasn't 100% ready the first pass, but the car made up for my lack of readiness. It was a bit of a botched launch for me, but I still pulled on the Z in first. Continued to stay in front for the quarter. Boost was 1 bar.

Is that a Stagea 260RS out there?

Next pass, since I won, was his choice. This time he got the leave.  Basically no arm drop, both get ready, then I go when he does.  This time I was much more ready, and got out on him just about straight away.  He missed a shift, and I went 2 for 2.  That pass, I turned it up a little as I wasn't sure how hard I would have to run him down.  They wanted to do a third run, this time from a roll.  I agreed to the roll race. This takes most of the all wheel drive advantage away. Its all hp and weight.

Ernie Fixmer drove the Stagea as the support vehicle.

Third roll race, I also won when he missed a shift.  Overall a fun day out playing with cars.  Drove the GT-R out and back. Ran it. 91 octane. New vs old, the old wins.

Driving this R34 to drop my kids the morning of the Hoonigan shoot.

Dyno time and Dead ECU's

Brian's R32 GT-R on the dyno

Dyno time. A dyno is a tool. Like a 10 mm socket.  Harder to lose, but lots more expensive too. With that said, we don't race dynos, even though lots of people and entire countries like to use them as a manhood measuring device.  The numbers mean something, but they don't mean everything, or nothing.  Brian's R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R car had never been on the dyno, but I drove it a bit, and it felt decent.  It was making about 12-13 psi with OEM boost control setup on 74% ethanol or E85 at the ECB-1.

Stagea 260RS as a dyno support vehicle. Maybe even some dyno time!

An R32 GT-R you can run rear wheel drive by pulling a fuse for the ATTESA system. Unlike the R33 or R34 which have backup power to the ATTESA pump (transfer case), an R32 GT-R transfer stays mostly open. Nothing is ever 100%, but we generally accept that for some power pulls, and no hugely long pulls, there is no need to drop the front propshaft.

First pull the car did ~290 horsepower and decent torque. A nice smooth curve. Nothing silly or crazy.  Added a couple of degrees of timing to see what it would do, and it picked up to 318 hp.  Seemed pretty happy. So next run tried some more, and it was done, so backed it back down to 318 hp level.  Now the fun comes, adding boost. I tried adding some duty cycle in the oem boost control setup, and nothing happened. So I changed to a three port solenoid I had, tried again, same thing.  So at this point, leave it or...  manual controller it is.  Put some boost in and car responded well. So we ended up with it spiking to about 20 psi, and then dropping to 18 psi.

Ended up at 414 hp and 387 lb/ft. Everything looked pretty good, but pegged the mass airflow meters. Each meter is good for about 200 hp. At about that much air flowing past, the 0-5 volt sensors will read close to 5 volts. At that point its not possible for them to measure any more air.  In the end that is just fine.

So the next mods are R35/Nissan meters in OEM sized housings. These should be able to meter air to about 600 hp.  That is way out of the range of N1 turbos.  Profec, or trying and figure out the boost control. Change the injectors to the Kudos 1150 cc long nose. Maybe some cam gears and tune the power a bit.

N1 turbo 46 mm inlet, 60 mm exducer A/R 0.8.  Turbine inlet 53 mm, Exducer 42 mm. Trim 62. A/R0.64

The next day, Brian had a Nissan Challenge event at Buttonwillow 13CCW.  So the plan was to go up and support him at the track. There were some challenges in the past, and I wanted to try and be there.  Got home after the dyno, and got everything ready.  Went to sleep with plans for early day the next morning. A 2 hour drive up to Buttonwillow.   Next morning, get the kids up, car loaded the final bit, go to start the car, and nothing.  Just crank and crank.  The ECUtalk wouldn't connect.    Crap dead ECU. Look at everything. Injectors start cycling.  Pull fuses. Reseat ECU. In the end I just had to give up.  I had a spare ECU at the shop. So for the second time in two days, back to the shop over the weekend.

All loaded up, but no go.

Coils pulled out to clear flooded engine

Dead ECU

Blue capacitor, this is normal.

Brown capacitor, this isn't normal.

I think may have had a flyer wire short pin 3 and 4 as part of the Nistune. The Nistune board also seems to have bitten the bullet.

Swapped ECU, loaded up the old program, car ran and drove. Next up, change the oil, and get back at the next round of mods for the #gtrhunter
