Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R Trunk Won't Open

Trunk will open from inside the car

Just had someone ask this question about opening their trunk.  There is a mechanical latch/lever/switch next to the latch assembly in the trunk of a Nissan Skyline.  The problem is if you slam the trunk hard enough you can move this mechanical switch. If it moves down, then the interior pull won't open the trunk any more.

Lever is down. Only the key will open the trunk

Switch is up, either the pull or key will open the trunk.

The RB26 is a timing belt engine. Like any engine, you want to make sure you get all the pulleys lined up correctly for the engine to run right. If you don't get everything lined up, you can end up chasing  issues, that turn out to be an actual mechanical problem. It is a little difficult to get all the dots and marks lined up because most of the time you don't have a straight view. Since your view is a little off, it helps to use a straight edge to double check all the timing marks.

My personal experience is that every time you have to go into the front of the RB26 engine, you want to replace the water pump, you want to replace the idler and tensioner pulleys, and the belt. You don't have to, some people get away with it, but for me, about every time I haven't replaced one of the big pulleys (bearings) they make noise. Kind of a "woooo,woooo,woooo" noise. Then the water pump I didn't replace, starts leaking out of the weep hole.  Eric over at EPP stocks a ton of RB26 parts, and I just picked up what I need to do the front of the RB on NISMO #500.

Pauls R35 GT-R in front of the Korean Friendship Bell

A few SoCal Nissan GT-R guys got together for a little cruise, and a Fast and Furious 6 viewing 5-25-13. Not a ton of cars this time, 7 R35's and 3 R32's. We met up at the Korean Friendship Bell in San Pedro. Great views, something I never even knew existed.  I have been doing a little bit of work to #500. Purchased a set of R34 wheels, 18 x 9 with 245/45/18 tires versus the stock 16 x 8 wheels and 225/50/16 tires.

Heat Treatments Nissan Skyline GT-R Goes 7.41@193

The Heat Treatments R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R is in Australia, and set a new personal best, and new record.  They ran a 7.45 and a 7.41 at a huge 193 mph.
Check out the video below. They said they were going to start running the 350Z if they went 7.4 in the R32, but hopefully they keep running it. 6's and 200 mph would be cool to see in the old R32.

Reece Mcgregor has today reset his own world record for the quickest 4wd powered car in the world. The team have been working extremely hard for many years to break out of the 7.5 (pb 7.53) zone and today, absolutely smashed it, firstly with a 7.45 @ 193, followed by the record setting 7.41 @ 193 mph. 

Big congratulations on a lot of hard work which eventually paid off. The team planned to release their Nissan 350z drag car once the car broke into the 7.4s, and we'll be waiting patiently for their next move.

Irwindale Thursday Night 1/8th Mile Drag Racing 5-16-13

A few of the local SoCal Nissan GT-R owners headed over to Irwindale Event Center for some 1/8th mile drag racing Thursday 5-16-13. There are not a lot of local drag strips in LA. Pomona 1/4 Mile drag strip is just about off limits to street cars due to neighbor complaints.

 Fontana - Auto Club Speedway Dragstrip was also shut down by some of its neighbors complaining. The drag strip runs alongside a set of train tracks. Nothing even that loud runs at the drag strip. Typical whiners that move in next to a racetrack or airport and complains.  The latest from July says they are going to install a sound wall to appease the "group of concerned citizens." Hopefully they open the 1/4 mile up again soon. The closest place to run a quarter mile now is Bakersfield.  Check out some photos from last night.

RD28 Engine Repair Manual

Why the RD28? It is a diesel version of the inline 6 Nissan engine. Its heavier and stronger than the old RB blocks.  79kg vs 69kg for the RB30.  Its not as hard as the RB30, but the deck thickness is huge.  12.8 mm for the RD28 vs 7.5 for most of the RB blocks.

Sad Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 : Don't Try This at Home

If you have to carry two tires, a jack, and enough wood to build a fence, maybe rethink things.

Come on kids, don't fuck them up like this.  Colors, are a personal preference, not my style. Its unique I will give it that. A roof rack and storage box with two spare wheels and enough wood so you can drive the car up driveways? Robert Ingram’s Nissan Skyline GTR

Gibson Motorsport in Australia has just started on a rebuild on the Nissan GT-R that won the 1991 Bathurst 1000 race.

The return of Gibson Motorsport build #2 Nissan GTR to the experienced hands of Fred Gibson and Alan Heaphy revives memories of the GMS connection to Thailand business man ( and motorsport fanatic) Prutiral Ratanakul Serireongrith.
Following the launch of Nissan’s new  four wheel drive Skyline GT-R, long time Nissansport competitor and parts importer Bruce Wilkinson contacted Fred Gibson regarding the development of a GT-R for ‘Pharn’ to compete in regional events, including the FIA sanctioned South East Asian Touring Car Championship. Shortly afterwards a Japanese built GT-R race car arrived from Bangkok at the GMS workshop in Healey Road for extensive modifications, using both Nismo and locally developed GMS performance parts, including a Hollinger gearbox. The car was then returned to Thailand where it achieved credible results.

Will be looking for some updates and pictures on bringing the car back into its as raced in 1991 shape.

This car had already made an indelible mark in Australian motorsport, winning the 1991 Bathurst 1000 in the time of 6 hours, 19 minutes and 14.8 seconds, a record that stood for almost 20 years! On delivery, both Fred and Nissan team driver Mark Skaife travelled to Bangkok to commission the GT-R and provide driver and technical training for the complex car, by now christened ‘Godzilla’ by the Australian media.

Track day. Driving a car on the track. Its not racing, but its fun, and something car enthusiasts enjoy. Taking a car around the track with no real restrictions. As fast as you feel comfortable driving.

The 1990 NISMO R32 Skyline GT-R was the base for the Group A race car, but that doesn't mean that you can just take a 23 year old car, and hit up a track day. Check out this video from Petrolicious. They put together some great videos. The car, well, it has Canadian plates and its in Southern California(see explanation below). It has a NISMO sticker, but its not.

I have had people ask me what year a particular RB26 engine was. I never really paid much attention to the numbers on the block. From my experience an RB was an RB was an RB. GoPro vs Contour Action Cameras Tested

AutoExpress in the UK tests the GoPro Hero 3  camera vs the Contour +2 camera.  I just purchased a GoPro Hero 3, and I have a couple of the older Contour HD cameras. The Contour HD is easy to use, more of a bullet shape. I like the way it attaches to the side of my helmet.  The old Go Pro was a nightmare to try and use. I could never figure it out. The newer model Hero 3 with wifi, an iPhone app, and remote is much easier to use. I haven't tried the new Contour +2.
