FS5R30A - Nissan Skyline GT-R - Transmission Rebuild Kit


There were two main transmissions used in the Nissan Skyline GT-R's from 1989-2002. The R32 and R33 used a 5 speed transmission from Nissan(FS5R30A), and the R34 GT-R used a 6 speed transmission from Getrag(V160). The FS5R30A is very similar to the 300ZX transmission internally. The Getrag is similar to the transmission used in the MK IV Toyota Supra. The input shaft and main shaft are unique to the GT-R on both transmissions, the rest of the internal parts are interchangeable.

  • The OEM rotors are cross drilled. Eventually in the GT-R racing range they went to a solid rotor, because cross drilled rotors crack. For racing use, usually a different kind of surface treatment is popular(Plain, slotted, J-Hook). Cross drilling looks good, and works well enough on the street. I like a two piece rotor as they weigh less than a solid disk. You can save several pounds per corner by going to a aluminum hatted rotor. DBA has their 5000 series of rotors but not in the stock 296 mm size, just the 4000 series rotors (Front DBA 4926 296MM   4000 Series Heavy Duty.)(Rear DBA 908)

BT2 - Championship Blue - Calsonic Blue- Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 .  This R32 was one of the nicest ones we have ever seen. RB26dett Oil Pump Gears Going Oval : Oil Pump Failures

This is something that we noticed fairly recently with the oil pump gears on the RB26. The inner gear on the oil pump has two flats that are driven on the crank. We noticed that we had some oil pumps that were binding. Measuring at the flats and the opposite side to the flats, the gears appear to be going oval. We have seen it in a JUN oil pump, and a Tomei oil pump.  Both pumps, when the gears were replaced with Spline drive gears, no longer showed signs of binding in the housings.

A motor vehicle that is at least 25 years old can be lawfully imported into the U.S. without regard to whether it complies with all applicable FMVSS.
EPA - Vehicles over 21 years old.
If the vehicle is at least 21 years old, there are no EPA compliance requirements upon importation. The age of the vehicle is determined by subtracting the calendar year of manufacture from the calendar year of importation.

NISMO Plate - 30000-RS590

We have had a few cars with these plates in the engine compartment. This plate says that the car has a NISMO twin plate clutch. Nothing crazy, no NISMO special. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Suspension Parts : R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R

The front subframe is one of the mounting points for the front suspension on an R32 GT-R.  Eight bolts hold the subframe to the chassis. The subframe provides the mounting points for the engine mounts.  The steering rack is held in to the subframe, the sway bar (anti-roll bar) is bolted to the subframe.

The main components of the front suspension.

The problems with the R32 GT-R suspension according to Mike Kojima.

"Read it and weep keyboard tuners and JDM fanbois. Contrary to popular belief and legends of awesomeness, the R32 GT-R has really shitty front suspension geometry. Very short, highly angular links result in a stupidly poor camber curve, bad roll center location, seriously bad lateral instant center location, a lot of scrub and too much anti dive. The result is serious understeer and torque steer with big tires. (Just ask Takumi in Initial D) and worst of all, jacking. A lot of the problem is the upper link location as shown in this photo I borrowed from Geoff Raicer of Full Race. The upper link is super short, angled forward and canted upward. This photo is at full droop, imagine how bad the upper link angularity is at ride height. I think some Jr. Nissan engineer was trying to design a suspension with more negative camber gain when the wheels were turned and he either didn't know or care about other things. I want to kick this guy in the nuts. Besides having a retardedly ungood amount of negative camber gain, the upper link angularity means that the lateral instant center is very close to the wheel centerline and the roll center is very low. When an attempt is made to correct the roll center by moving the pivot for the lower arm, the lateral instant center gets even closer. This means that the front suspension wants to jack with a lifting moment that also causes wheel tuck. Yikes this is bad! We have photos of this happening to the car and other R32's on the track. What was leading edge technology in the early 90's sucks now. "

What Kind of Gas Should I Put in My Nissan Skyline?

What kind or octane gasoline should you use in your Nissan Skyline?

What kind or octane gasoline should you use in your Nissan Skyline?

A.  Premium pump gas. 

What does that mean?  Whatever is the highest octane fuel you can get locally. Here in the USA that can be anywhere from 94 octane (AKI) to 90 octane(AKI).

But wait a second, aren't Skylines supposed to run on 100 octane? In Japan they have 100 octane.

A. 100 octane (RON) isn't 100 octane (RON+MON/2).

There are two different scales at which octane is measured. RON and MON. Most countries use RON which is the higher of the two numbers.


The most common type of octane rating worldwide is the Research Octane Number (RON). RON is determined by running the fuel in a test engine with a variable compression ratio under controlled conditions, and comparing the results with those for mixtures of iso-octane and n-heptane.


Another type of octane rating, called Motor Octane Number (MON), is determined at 900 rpm engine speed instead of the 600 rpm for RON.[1] MON testing uses a similar test engine to that used in RON testing, but with a preheated fuel mixture, higher engine speed, and variable ignition timing to further stress the fuel's knock resistance. Depending on the composition of the fuel, the MON of a modern pump gasoline will be about 8 to 12 octane lower than the RON, but there is no direct link between RON and MON. Pump gasoline specifications typically require both a minimum RON and a minimum MON.


In most countries, including Australia, New Zealand and all of those in Europe, the "headline" octane rating shown on the pump is the RON, but in Canada, the United States, Brazil, and some other countries, the headline number is the average of the RON and the MON, called the Anti-Knock Index (AKI), and often written on pumps as (R+M)/2. It may also sometimes be called the Posted Octane Number (PON).

Will my car run better on 100 octane (AKI)?

A. All things considered, no. Not unless you need that octane to prevent detonation. 

Many high-performance engines are designed to operate with a high maximum compression, and thus demand fuels of higher octane. A common misconception is that power output or fuel efficiency can be improved by burning fuel of higher octane than that specified by the engine manufacturer. The power output of an engine depends in part on the energy density of the fuel being burnt. Fuels of different octane ratings may have similar densities, but because switching to a higher octane fuel does not add more hydrocarbon content or oxygen, the engine cannot develop more power.

The big sticker on the ECU is a pretty good sign that this ECU is not stock. 

Does your car have a stock ECU?

A. If not then some tuned ECU's are very aggressive, and can cause damage. This is why we recommend that a modified car be retuned for local fuel. You will get the most out of the car.

Oil Change and Oil Filter on a Nissan Skyline GT-R

Oil, the engines life blood. In a high performance car like a Nissan Skyline GT-R, it is a good idea to have a regular oil change schedule, and stick to it.  Some people say every 3,000 miles, or every 6 months.  Some push the changes out to more than that. For any car you are going to run at the track, it is always a good idea to change the oil before and after every track day.  Cheap insurance.

Oil - 7.5W-30 recommended in Japan(R32). 4.5 liters in the pan, 0.4 liters in the oil filter. A good 10-30W synthetic is a  start for a street car. Oil Change/Filter change. Keep it happy. We have used Redline 15/50w or 10/30w full synthetic. We are on Royal Purple now, and seems to be working well for us. 4.5 liters, stock. Filling it to the bump on the dipstick is generally considered acceptable. There are some crazy oil guys out there. Check Bob is the Oil guy if you want to go oil nuts.

Engine oil, and gear oil viscosity is based on ambient temps.  This is the chart from the R34 GT-R service manual, but will work for R32, and R33. 

Tools -  Getting at the oil filter on an R32 GT-R with Hicas can be a trick. It is under the collector. Between the Hicas lines on the frame rail, and the various coolant and air lines under the collector, getting at the oil filter can be a bear.  We recommend you buy a 3 claw oil filter wrench. Sears/Craftsman have them.   They are about $15-$20 and will get the oil filter off about 99% of the time on an RB26.

Some people use a screwdriver to stab the filter if they can't get it off. While it can work, it makes a mess, and if you do it wrong (we have seen it done wrong), you can end up with a nub of a very stuck oil filter.

A strap wrench is possible, but again not a lot of room to swing any tools under the collector.  Oil filter pliers, same deal.

In real life all oil filters would be 1/4 turn past hand tight, but even then they can still be difficult to take off.

K&N HP 2008 oil filter

The K&N HP 2008 oil filter has a 1" nut on the end that makes removal a bit easier. It also has a provision to safety wire the filter in place.  Most people wouldn't safety wire/lock wire their filter in place, but in the race world, it is a great idea.

Other Options - An oil filter relocation kit is a popular way to make oil changes a little easier.  There are a number of ways of doing it. If you are putting a relocator, we highly recommend an oil cooler at the same time.  The OEM filter is a 3/4-16 thread.  Some oil filter relocations change the filter thread pitch, so make sure you check the instructions before you buy a gross of oil filters.
