Robbie from RIPS in New Zealand finally did it. A new World Record time for a Nissan Skyline GT-R, beating the previous record holders 7.41 by Heat Treatments Racing. Both New Zealand based cars.

7.48 @189 mph. RIPS R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R Gets Into the 40's

The quickest and fastest Nissan Skyline GT-R in the world has been the Heat Treatments R32 GT-R.  March of 2013, Heat Treatments and Reece McGregor went 7.41@193 mph.   Since 2007, when Heat Treatments beat the HKS R33 GT-R, it has been the top dog.  The HKS car held the top spot for nearly 5 years, but Heat Treatments brought the title to New Zealand.

The HKS R33 Drag GT-R has long been one of the most recognized symbols of the HKS global brand, and held the title to world's fastest AWD Drag car for almost five years with its remarkable 7.671 second
pass at Japan's Sendai circuit in October 2001. 

Now RIPS Racing, from New Zealand, is nibbling at the heels of the Heat Treatments car.  Yesterday, they went 7.48@189 mph in their RB30 powered, powerglide equipped R32. Check out some of the videos, several views below.

Finally into the 7.4s. Done on 26 x 10in tyres, E85 fuel at 1300kg with a pretty gentle 60ft of 1.23. Can't wait to see what we can do with 28in tyres, methanol, a decent turbo and some weight out of the car. Thank you to everyone who has helped and supported us this season, we've had a blast!!!

The Heat Treatments car hasn't been real active, as they were only pushing their own record down. Now they have  another New Zealand car close to their record. RIPS sounds like they might want to push the car into the 6 second range all wheel drive. 7.48 isn't bad on the tracks in New Zealand. The prep is not as good as the prep in some other countries. So if this car travels, even in the current setup, who knows how fast it might go.

RIPS MGAWOT III - 7.78 @ 178 MPH

Robbie from RIPS in New Zealand just got his first 7 second pass in the MGAWOT III. 178 mph shows its making some power. A 1.26 60 is good, but the Heat Treatments R32 sees some 1.1 - 1.0 60 foots.  Every tenth of a second normally translates to about 0.2 at the big end.

Great day after all. It rained 2 or 3 times but we got out 4 times. 7.80, 7.86, 7.78, 7.80 all at 180-181mph. Happy team all things considered. We need some fresh tyres then we can try to wind it up some more.

RIPS RB30 Powered Dragster Ready for a New Season

Good luck to Rob, in the coming season.  I think he might need to get the car to Australia or the US, to really show its potential.  The tracks in New Zealand, just don’t have the prep to support a car this fast. 

I'm happy with the car now, I think it looks much better than last year, we have wider rear wheels and tyres, new front and rear wings and top fuel style side deflectors, hopefully this will all help with traction and stability so we can push it much harder than we previously could.

This is an old post, over a year old, but I think that Rob from RIPS still had the car. Either way, it is pretty cool. Almost a tube frame R32 GT-R. He said that without a powertrain it was about 450 KG or just under 1000 lbs. Rob is pretty well known for his RB30 builds, and has been having some fun with a Stagea called MGAWOT, and currently building up an R34 GT-R called MGAWOT II.

RIPS Racing in New Zealand, has set a personal best in their drag car, MGAWOT III.  The RB30 powered, and powerglide equipped R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R went 7.64 @ 182 mph. The car is moving. They see the 7.41 of the fastest GT-R in the world - Heat Treatments R32 GT-R in their sights. Rain seems to have cut the event short.

 Lets put in a soft tune just to get a qualifying number on the board. BOOM 7.64 @ 182 like it was on rails. The changes we've made to other areas of the car are obviously working well to get a pb with the power we had in it. Then the rain came.

Another day, another quick time.  R32's in Australia are in full on battle mode.  Who is going to be the first into the 6's?  Is it possible in a R32 chassis? Aero is going to be a big factor.  Both the Heat Treatments, and RIPS R32 both have aero fronts, with water/air intercoolers.

Step it up my New Zealand countrymen. Can't let the Aussies get too close. Time to turn the wick up.

Big Bird 2 : Redux : Nissan Skyline GT-R R33

Big Bird 2  Nissan Skyline GT-R : The white before the yellow

The 1995 Nissan Skyline GT-R - R33 version just started to turn 25 years old, and is now legal to import to the USA.  You can legally own one of your favorite JDM classic cars.  In the first Fast and Furious movie, there was a yellow R33 GT-R, that was the character Leon's car.  Our plan is to take this QM1 R33, and build a tribute to that car : Big Bird 2.

After the movie, on the original car, SoCal Speed Shop did a direct port nitrous install.  With a stock engine, HKS 2530 turbos the R33 GT-R did 440 horsepower at the wheels.  With the nitrous, it went up to 650 horsepower at the wheels, with a stock engine, stock transmission.  That combination was good for a best pass of 10.7 @ 137 mph in Palmdale, California at the old LACR. Nitrous is fun.

Since this car will be our demo car, we should make a good one.  We will be replacing the #bluecar with this car, and it will do a little bit of double duty.  Some road course, like R's Day, and some limited drag racing/ 1/2 mile racing.  It will not be the fastest time attack car in the US. It will not be the fastest R33 GT-R in the US.  It will however be a fun, fast all around car.

Original Big Bird, when it was white at Willow Springs. HKS upgrades, work Meister wheels. 

Since the plan is not to make an exact duplicate, we can take some creative license on the parts we are going to use. 

So far the plan is to paint the car yellow.  We think we have the right color, but even if it isn't exact, it will be close enough. Put the crazy knight lightning dude on the side. Put some similar wheels on it. Never really liked the Work Rezaks, so probably some BBS LM in 18 x 10, or maybe rebarrel them to something like an 18 x 11.  The R33 has the most wheel well, and will swallow the most tire out of any of the modern Skyline GT-R.  295 to a 305 tire might be in order, all the way around -  like the R34 race car.

Big Bird 2 Updates : Turbos and Engine Insides

More updates. Did more things, didn't really post here on the blog about it.  So the RIPS assembled RB30 that we got was stock inside (good for lots of power, but we want more than lots), so decided to upgrade it without going all HAM. No billet blocks, no 3.2 strokers. Just stock crank, CP Pistons, some aluminum rods.  Had the pistons and oil pump treated at WPC.

When it comes to turbochargers, the bigger the wheels, the more air they move, to a point. Since the compressor wheel is mechanically coupled to the exhaust wheel, and the exhaust wheel drives the compressor wheel, if the exhaust wheel can't flow any more air, or is in-efficient, then you can't ingest any more air.

These are pretty huge. 54.1 mm inducer. 71.4 exducer on the compressor side.  56.5 mm inducer and 53.6 mm exducer on the turbine side. In the meat of the efficiency they flow about 40 lb/min airflow at 2.5 pressure ratio on the compressor. Exhaust side with the 0.64 trim maxes out at about 19 lb/min at 2.5 pressure ratio. In theory these should do about 100 horsepower over the GT-RS at the same boost levels.

GReddy introduces a new updated dry filter to the popular Japanese Airinx line. The new Airinx will eventually replace the previous application-specific GReddy Airinx AY-MB and Airinx AY-SM kits with the new Airinx M and Airinx S elements. The larger Airinx M currently comes in three popular adapter diameter sizes: 70mm, 80mm and 100mm. The smaller Airinx S also comes in three popular adapter diameter sizes 50/60mm, 70mm and 80mm. Both sizes include the optional GReddy badge to attach to the side of the filter. These dry filter elements work well for both normally-aspirated and forced induction systems and are easily washable with water and mild detergent.
